But really, what is their criteria? We have a lot of places around us that are less than a miles walk.
A Dollar General, Sav-a-Lot grocery store, Ace Hardware, convenience store, Walgreens, Wing Stop, liquor store, bar, Tijuana Flats..... what more do you need?

But we could never truly live car or truck free.  Let's say I walk to my closest grocery store, I know for a fact that the supplies were delivered by Truck.   :gap:

How far out of town do you live?

The shortest distance to anywhere was at least 2 miles away.

I am 7 miles to the nearest bus service much less town. I probably rate a negative number rather than the 0 it gives me.

I'm with oldyeller, but I did it anyway.  I only live 4 miles from the heart of town, but they list me as 1 out of 100.  It's flawed.   :shake:

I only got 3 out of 100 cause there's a "market" .54 miles away, but it's a frickin scroungy gas station and is grossly understocked and overpriced.  If there were sidewalks along any of the roads I may rate higher, but what's a frickin sidwalk anyway?

  Nate, we could almost be neighbors!  I've got a minimart .57 miles away, but its actually got a pretty good stock, and the price gouging isn't too bad.  Surprisingly, they've actually got decent prices, and an awesome selection on hard alkihol!!  :gap:

I got a 6.

My last place would have scored maybe 1 of 100 because I did have a chevron station 1/10 mile away, but otherwise it's at least 4 miles from anything else.  Previous to that would have been 0 cause it was at least 5 miles from anywhere, but a couple places before that would have scored high cause I lived right around the corner from a foodmax, winco, target, subway, usbank and the mall.

Figured I'd score pretty low, but came in at 69/100!!  Obviously those good people haven't been here, or they'd realize you can't easily sustain human life going to the places they mentioned....    :haha:

unless you steal a shopping cart!!

LOL..our local walmart has carts that lock if you try to take them off the lot.
I like to park in the very back of the lot to get some walking in, every little bit counts.
I was wheeling a FULL cart back one day, got too close to 'the line' and the dang thing locked up on me!!
DENIED BY WALMART!!

I was probably 50' from the car and no way I was leaving my load there on the road. Much as I tried to force it forward it would not budge, but I found I could drag it backward with much effort and noise. It was quite a scene, especially when I pulled it up to my new Prius and not some beater. LOL

  when I was in my apt when I first moved up here, we'd find stolen carts all the time.  The raley's got new locks on them, and one day I saw a guy getting arrested at a local park (bum) he had taken the back wheels off a raley's cart, and put bike wheels on it.

It's not a matter of being able to walk anywhere in our tiny town.  It is a matter of a very limited selection (or no selection!) of just about anything you can name -- coupled with high prices for whatever you buy.

As an example, we have one grocery store.  It's pretty good for a small town, but with no competition, you can guess at the prices.
Want to buy clothing?  Bwahahahahaha!!!   :rofl2:

And I refuse to take an electric golf cart to cut firewood...     :ack:

I could go on, but you get the point.

I may have told you this before, but if I ever win the lottery I'm going to open a competing grocery store there
