Advanced Theology III - Creation, Evolution & Prophecy
« on: Jul 05, 2008, 02:50:14 PM »
Yes, this is another "religion" thread.  The previous threads have become so overload with different topics that people have expressed reluctance to join because they feel behind in the discussion.  I have linked this thread to the most recent thread.

The topic of this thread is "It Is Written" as what the Bible says, not what I think it says, is what really matters.  This afternoon I did a search for the phrase "It is written" in the New Testament and would like to link these texts to the originals, often in the Old Testament.  We can look at the context of each and see how they relate/apply.  During the search I found the reason why this type of study is important.  I'll post texts in the order they appear, please let me know if I missed any along the way, and we can see where it leads.  The first text will be out of order as it provides the basis for the study.

(1) Rom 15:3-4  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  (4)  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Finding the connections in the Bible that verify it's consistency is important.  Some of the texts deal directly with prophecy and others are simply quotes.

So, what text is this one referencing?

I'll go first...

Here are the two texts:

Rom 15:3-4  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  (4)  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Psa 69:8-9  I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.  (9)  For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

What can we learn from the context of having these texts side by side?

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I used to really like these threads, but now I just don't get them... :screwy: its hard to engage in discussions with you Blackdiamond without wondering what the hidden Seventh Day Adventist agenda is, and when it will surface. :yikes:

Also, when you start a thread like this, its almost like you are trying to teach us and get a point out...  :dunno:

I disagree, I am a devout confirmed catholic, but that doesn't mean I have lost my sense of humor.

So you were confirmed as a member of the Catholic church... and you are working to be a perfect christian?

Do you think your church fathers would be pleased with your mocking?

Now what do you mean by "devout"?

May I just take this moment to point out >>>

Matthew 5:22 (New Living Translation)
But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

Consider this my last thread as I had no agenda by starting this thread and it's becoming obvious that there isn't anything more positive to be gained with these discussions.  I have thought about doing this search/study for a while and thought I'd use the board for feedback and motivation.  I don't apologize for my beliefs and I'm sorry I'm not willing to "toss them out" to make everyone more comfortable during these discussions.

If things go well I might make the round up and we can all simply wheel.   :driving:

My favorite passage: Mathew 7:1

You can call me an elitist if you want..  because my God is elite, and Im one of His.. so im cool with that...

I can see why that passage would be your favorite..  because you think it gives you freedom to do whatever you want without condemnation from others... but if you claim to be a follower of Christ... (devout), then it is necessary that you are judged in the regard of being held accountable. I would hope that if I were acting in direct opposition to what I profess to believe that someone would call me out!

Didn't South Park say it was the Mormons who got it right?  :headscratch:   Sorry if I'm wrong.  I get all of my knowledge from TV.

Seriously though, I'm sorry but I cannot get on board with the idea that there is one specifically RIGHT religion.  I do believe there is a "higher power" and I believe that people should follow the basic concepts of the 10 Commandments, however they might translate into their religion.  But you can't tell me that a group of people on the other side of the earth who have never even heard of the Bible are all going to hell because they never stepped foot inside of a church, yet they lived their whole lives praising whoever they believe their "higher power" to be and living their lives as good caring people?  I think it's extremely closed minded to believe that any one religion is THEEE only right way.  I also find it funny how the people who are supposed to be the most devout christian people are the quickest to pass judgement on others.  I don't say this because of anything specifically posted in this thread, I've just been seeing a lot of it in my life lately.

A truely good religious person, should they care enough to respond to Mini's first post, should have said something along the lines of "I'm sorry you feel that way, Mini, and I truly hope that one day you find the Lord.  Please let me know if you'd ever like any guidance or help in understanding the Word."

:psss: I guess what I'm trying to say here is, I don't get why it matters what you want to call yourself (Christian, Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, etc.) as long as you have faith in a higher power (i.e. God) and you live your life in the most upstanding way you possibly can, how can you be "wrong?"
RIP Kyle, we love and miss you man.  :smooch:

First off.. no one can keep the ten commandments... ever! Not even a 5 year old child.. I have one, and can tell you he does wicked little things like ALL kids even though they were never taught it...  its called a sinful nature... The Bible says there are non-righteous, not one... that we were born into sin... Thats why it was necessary that we had a propitiation for sin by someone sinless.. that was Christ.. so by mocking Him and what He did is pretty much spitting in His face and rejecting that... and therefore saying that you think you are good enough to make it on your own... which is crazy!
