If someone asked me these questions point blank with no choices I would have trouble with some of them, but add the multiple choices and usually I can get the correct one. Kinda like a refresher from what I learned in school.

Not me, I'm one of these idiots who gets all tripped up when they offer several answers.  Usually one or two of them are obviously there to throw you off, but it's like everything comes back in a flood and gets intertwined and I get confuzzled.  If it's stuff I just learned recently then multiple choice makes it easy and I go with my gut instinct.  But my memory is :pokinit: in my old age.  LOL.  I remember in elementary school being able to recite all sorts of long things word for word.  I ALWAYS screw up dates though.   Ohhhhhhwellllllll.

I remember in elementary school being able to recite all sorts of long things word for word.

I think that right there is the problem with school they don't teach to learn, they teach how to memorize. Then over time you will loose this information, personally I think the whole process should be revamped to a persons abilities not an agenda. My granddaughter is a great memorizer but beyond that she is not the brightest bulb. She gets honor roll and such but if she tries something on her own the work will be incomplete. On the other hand Rocks For Brains can analyze and create what needs to be done and gets it, and he also is very smart and learns stuff doesn't just memorize it to be lost once the task goes away.

Unfortunately to memorize is how I was taught in school, this does help me with the multiple answer scenario but kills me on the pop question. Fortunately I also have the ability to learn and use so I'm OK.

I think there is a need for teachers to not only teach but also analyze and place a student on a course to the real world. In Germany they do this giving students a direction or path they may want to choose, by the time they reach what would be High School they pretty much know where they are headed in life, and instead of wasting the students time on subjects that they will never use they get the training that they will need to succeed in their future, sure we learn from what has happened in the past but why should history be so important that it may and does determine weather we graduate or not. The trades in school should be more important. I learned so much more in the shop classes than I ever did in history, and remember more of those than history. I'm not saying that history is not important and if a person wants to have history as a major then that's what should be most important. My major was media with a minor in photography but since those were shop classes they paled in comparison to English, math, history, geography. Due to this it hurt and killed my opportunity as I wanted it since I was great in my major and sucked at the required classes.

That right there is the ticket for me.  I can memorize, "learn", whatever all day long but if I don't then USE it, it's gone pretty quickly.  English was the one subject in school that I excelled at and never lost, and I'm guessing that's probably because I have to then use it on a daily basis.  Kinda pisses me off that I spent 4 whole years in high school studying the Spanish language and all I can say now is "Hola, me llamo Margarita!"   haha

Yeah you really want to "learn" it or you are just temporarily memorizing only to be lost at a later date. I had one teacher that saw something that I may need later in life. She basically told me this is something that you need and should take that class since it will help me down the road. The funny thing is it was typing, little did I know that I'd be typing as much as I did when I went to work for LA. Sure when I left school I didn't type for a very long time but now Id be lost without this skill.

I didn't pay attention either, most of what I know even in history or anything in general I "learned" after school. Sure the memorizing took place and I squeezed by but I had to relearn everything, school only planted a seed.

I have never had any interest in anything politics until lately. And I still don't really even get what difference it makes if you do know how many amendments the Constitution has, or how many voting members the House of Representatives has or how many justices are there on the U.S. Supreme Court?
I didn't see how most of the questions make much of a difference about being a citizen or not.

How about an English test first, and I mean being able to take the test and answer questions verbally in the official language of the country to which you are pledging allgieance.

ENGLISH TEST!!! :woohoo: :yesnod:

I do not think the US has an official language. That is the reason I was given as to why we cannot give them a language test. I have asked a few people about it, and I always get the same answer: US does not have an official language. English may be the most accepted language, but I would not be surprised if Spanish became the most accepted language in 100 years. To many dang illegals and stuff. :headshake:

To me, not knowing how something is supposed to work...means you can't tell when it's not working...and IMHO, Congress isn't working. I wish I knew more about the Constitution and the workings of Congress. Those Parliamentary rules suck...for craps sake, just bring an item to the floor and cast your vote.

This is a link to the actual test, sample questions. http://usgovinfo.about.com/blinstst.htm I remember helping my wife study...but, she died before taking the test. I think, at least for me, this test is one reason I respect and admire emigres who go through the whole convoluted process and become an American..and why I am so opposed to amnesty for those who don't. I know probably 50 people who have come here from Ireland, Laos or Thailand...all legally, everyone of them said it was their proudest moment.

I am all for making English the official language...but as long as Comrades Pelosi and Reid are in power it won't happen and it's probably too un-PC to happen anyway. We need to do something to retain American culture, lest we go the way of Europe (the UK in particular) and let one minority set our agenda.

I hope everyone has a good, safe and enjoyable Independence Day.

but how does knowing how many voting members there are of the house of rep tell you if things are working or not?
To me it would just be a memorization test and I'll forget it all in a week.
We just had two guys at work get there citizenship a couple weeks ago. We were all very proud of them :usa:

True...but for craps sake...30 seconds and you know it. It's not complicated or confusing, hell it's shorter than a phone number.

I could live my entire life very happily never having known that.
If you enjoy knowing this stuff more power to you, but to me most of those questions just seemed more like trivia than necessary to know to become a viable citizen.
