heat
« on: Jun 19, 2008, 02:16:20 PM »
my truck runs real hot when I cruz around 70. Whenever I slow down to pass through a town (395) it cools down to the middle of the gauge. So i believe that it isn't the thermostate. I think that I should just put a new radiator in but I want to fix the problem, not just cover it up? any ideals?

Flush the system maybe? Pressure test the system and your cap as well.

sounds like it maybe an obstruction, flush the system, replace the radiator and backflush the system..... could also be low fluid level or a bubble in the system..... how hot is really hot?it it showing all the way red or what? that over time will warp a head if it hasnt already. are you losing any coolant? water in the oil? sweet smelling exhaust? diminished economy? anything?

what is the overall general tune of the vehicle?

replace the hoses, and the thermostat

when I was first learning I replaced everything in one foul swoop.  Only to realize that it was a broken guage.  It just always reads Hot.    hahaha.    O well the radiator leaked and needed to be replaced anyway.

Mine needs replacing - it's about 40 degrees off.  Cold and just started is about the middle and normal is 90% up to the red.

But getting hotter the more you rev it...  usually it's exactly the opposite - unless you have nearly zero flow and the thing can't keep up. (normal is gets hotter in a traffic jam/etc due to no airflow over the radiator)

LAST WEEKEND WAS HOT! i will try to flush the system. It has one of those prestone flush kits on it already so it might be an ongoing problem. I've only owen the truck for 5000 miles. And the heat problem is getting progressivly worse. The gauge almost hits red. The top white line is where it stops due to the fact that I slow down or stop. I replaced the cap already but I did have the whole motor apart so maybe there is that "air pocket"? that seems weird but if thats the problem then great! Thanks for the ideas!

Try changing the thermostat since that is the cheapest & go from there :twocents:

I would flush and get rid of air bubbles before I changed out any parts... but if flushing, you might as well change the thermostat too.

if the thermostat doesnt have a  bleed ball, drill a small hole thru it  to let air bubbles bleed out

Explain to me the process of bleeding the system. I was just going to flush it with a hose?? I live in So. Cal and I was driving back from mammoth mountain. Going 80ish my truck will get real close to the red mark on the temp gauge. I've already run a new cap for about 1000miles.
Is a clutch fan the fan behind the radiator?? I do have one of those. thanks for the impute!

take off the radiator cap. run the motor at operating temp. turn heat on high.
air bubbles will make there way to the top of the rad. just keep an eye on it and once you fell there's no more air put your cap back on and you should be good to go. you may meed to top off the radiator when done?
