dual case noise????
« on: May 30, 2008, 03:50:29 PM »
does anyone have added drive train noise with dual cases.  I just put mine in and took it out on the road last night and noticed a kind of loud humming sound while driving in two wheel drive.  I only hit maybe 35 mph but it was noticable.  Any input would be great.  Thanks!

Yes, more gears, more noise. Once I put the shifter boots on I can barely hear it.

I thought you fill both cases through the rear case oil fill hole.  If I'm mistaken please let me know.

You are right. They share the oil.

Best you recheck the oil level in the Tcase, you should have put one qt in the crawl box as stated above. Since you did not you should be one qt low, it takes awhile for the oil to get in the crawler. I would fill and recheck a few times after driving to make sure its full.

when filling the cases the very first time when the boxes are dry, dump 1 quart of lube thru the shifter hole of the front case, then fill the rear case,

after that anytime  you check or fill  use the rear cases fill plug,

i'm gonna reckon you didnt dump a quart in the front case either

this is why after they ran awhile they quieted down,  you were running the front case dry,  as you drove  oil  finally  worked its way thru  and leveled out,  but gear oil is thick ,  it takes awhile to pass thru the small holes  and  seep thru the bearings to the front box

I didn't dump oil in the front case, but I filled the tcase at 1am went home, came back the next morning and refilled.  Mine were noisy for a good 6 months.
