Iv got stock dual cases with marlin 23 spline adapter. the bolts that hold the cases to the transmission loosened up and the gasket began to leak.  I caught it pretty quick and changed the gasket but now Iv got some noise in the cases. the noise comes and goes somtimes its a ringing noise and somtimes a grinding bearing kind of noise. it tends to make the noises in 2wd or 4hi if I let the rpms get under 2500rpm. iv got 5.29's and 33s so its not like im lugging it. what I want to know is how loud will dual cases get befor they fail ? im thinking if I run it tell the noise gets worse ill have a better chance finding somthing when i inspect the cases. iv never had cases apart and dont know if id recognise a problem unless it is kind of obvious. if anyones got any advice let me know. Thanks

When you had it apart to replace the gasket, I would have inspected the bearings, coupler, and gears.

so when I inspect the cases should I mainly focus on the crawl box and the adapter? and if there is damage should it be fairly obvious?

Hard to tell.  Won't know until you tear into it.  I would examine everything.  Especially, the coupler, bearings, and input/output shafts.  Generally, those are places of failure.  And see what the wear looks like on the gears.

I would call and talk to the guys at Marlin, cause they have way more experience at this.  I wish Mike would chime in on more of this stuff, he used to, which made it nice.

Are you positive it's a marlin adapter? My tg adapter rang for quite a while and then finally stopped after about 10k miles.

check fluid level?  what gear oil you using?  I had noisy duals, but I had 2 first gen cases which I was told had straight cut gears which in the later years were helical cuts.  I put marlins 4.7 gears in the rear case and it quited it down very substantially.  If you take everything apart take good pics and don't worry when the inside of your case looks like a spiderweb of fractures that's just how the castings look :yesnod:
