all pro shock hoop install help
« on: May 21, 2008, 06:01:14 PM »
I got a 4 inch lift kit from all-pro and I was trying to place the shock hoop against the frame and the top touches the fender well.  I realize that sometimes you gotta pound it or cut it but I was under the impression that with 12" front shocks and their hoop it wouldn't be necessary to do that.  I called them and they told me that the round base of the shock hoop doesn't need to completely on the frame and that some can be hanging off the bottom but that doesn't sound right to me.  I don't have a body lift and was looking for advice on how to mount these hoops.  Thanks

compress the side you are trying to setup and mount the bottom of the shock to the axle, with the axle completely compressed on that side, and the shock completely compressed, that will tell you where the mounting location will be. :twocents:

If I lay it against the inner fender there is about a 1/2 inch gap between the mounting point on the hoop and the frame.

The problem is that my arb compressor is sitting where I'd need to cut as well as some added fuse boxes for lights and etc.  I'll figure something out I was just wondering if anybody ran into the same problem and had a solution without cutting or pounding in the fender well.

Angle them out towards the tire more. Compress the springs to the bump stops, maybe you can cut them down a bit.

At ride height this is all the up I have on my shock. The bump stop on the shock will compress down to about one inch. These are 13" BBCS shocks.

When modifying rigs sometimes you have to move stuff around.

Just grind the shock hoop mounting surface to an angle so that the shock hoop is angled towards the tire. I have seen many people do that and it works good. I would say don't cut the fenderwell out if you don't have to. I did and the heat from the exhaust manifold comes right into the cab.

Make sure you use the support braces & weld them in  :twocents:

What Allpro is telling you to do is the right way if you try to keep the whole mount on the frame it will tip the shock mount out to far and you tires will rub. Don't ask me how I know this. :gap:

I got some 3/8 inch thick plate that I was gonna cut and weld to the shock hoop mounting points after I grind them down to a little better angle.  Then I was gonna weld the plate to the frame so I don't have to weld in a circle.  I think I read somewhere if you go that route you can skip the braces.  What do you guys think?

This is what you have to do when you don't install the braces. The hoop ripped the frame & I had to patch it. Next I'm going to plate it.

ive had it happen on my '80 do it right the first time or you'll be regretting it later when your shock and mount are ripped off the frame and then you get to do it twice.  just keep them out of the way and just like oop[s said earlier sometimes when you modify a rig you have to move stuff,  just part of the fun is all

thanks for the input.  I added 2 1/2 x 4 inch x3/8 inch thick plate to the base of the shock hoop and I also added the braces.  I was able to bevel the hoops enough to get the hoops right up against the fender well.  It looks good and I doubt it'll move.  Thanks.
