When I did the SAS on my 1990 3.0 truck I used 14" stocks which ment the shock hoop placement was tuff. 89+ trucks(90+ 4runner) with a 3.0 have that sound deaden box(SDB) between the filter box and throttle body. The SDB  ended up resting on the forward most shock tab ear with 6" of shock shaft . I slit a peice of 5/16 hose and used it as a pad but it always seemed to get pushing out. We all know what a hole in that box would do :(  . I recently aquired a 89 4-runner air filterbox to throttle setup complete with all the hoses. The first thing I notced was it had no SDB. I decided to install the stright through elbow peice inplace on the SDB for clearance. I now have about 1" of space. When I drove my truck later I noticed and increase of power  :dunno: toque. Its about the difference of having the A/C on and then turning it off.  You can also hear the air flow. I guess the port in the SDB cause's to much turbulance and cuts back the air flow. I won't know what it costs from Toyota tell Monday but the Part# 17861-65010.

I don't think we have to my 3.0 members here. After getting on the freeway at 5:15 in Fresno its nice to have that little extra to push those 37 around. I still drive slow but my truck has a little more go.

Dave, can you snap a quick picture and post it? I'm wondering if you are talking about what is often referred to as an "Intake Silencer Removal".

CruzrDave

Well unfortantly I no longer notice the increase, I just got use to over time  . No problem sence its a factory part on an 88-89 V6 4-runner.

I was calling it a sound deaden box but intake silencer sounds a lot better. I am sure we got the same part in mind. I'll post a pic up of it on monday. I take it you seen this done before? I thought I had an original idea  :sad2:

I have, but your way is muuuuch easier. What I have seen several people do involves having a piece of pipe bent at a muffler shop to replace the whole intake silencer section.

scott.475

Here is a good write up of how other people have done what I think your talking about. I'd rather go your route, if it accomplishes the same thing.

Yeah thats the same, sort of. What he did looks more like the Downey Intake system. I just replaced the intake silencer with an earlier factory stright through elbow. I was going to buy the Downey kit but sence I had to replaced all the air hoses when I built the motor, it would have been a waste of money to cut them up. I'm waiting for Mike to send me the picks.

The elbow costs $13.15 from Toyota.

Yikes, I just got quoted $44! Though the part number he referenced is -6502 0. Did a little research and they are definitely two distinct items, but from the descriptions I found I don't know what the difference is.

Got it figured out. The part # with the '2' in it is the silencer box itself, the part we are trying to get rid of. What happens is, if you call or email the dealer and give them a model year that came with the box, the part number will automatically revert to what should be there, not what we want to be in there. And, the dealership always asks you "what's it for", so just tell them it is for an '89 4 Runner 3.0. Even when I gave him the '1' part number when he had the '91 info on the screen the computer would not accept it.

So, if you order online or anything, just use the info for an '89 4Runner. My dealer wanted $16.10 for the elbow. Or this place for $10.36, http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=searchCatalogOEM&siteid=213871.

I went through the dealer since I'm moving soon and don't want to go through all the hassle of tracking a mailed item if it doesn't get here in time.

Hey Dave I will more than likely do this mod...seems that it worked good for you and if the power difference is compared to having the a/c on and off....well thats a whole lot of difference to me

I have a 3vz-e and I don't have this SDB you're talking about it came stock with the elbow and I don't think later models with that SDB here

I also removed this part and re-routed the tube directly to the intake.

The piece I removed is the upper left hand box in your pic. The box has a striagth through elbow but it has a hole in the center that dumps into the box. The 88-89 4-runner used just a plan elbow like the one on the upper right hand but it is a hrad plastic. I will get a pic of that up. The 88-89  also had the peice you have circled.

I was refering to the circled area .

I also said that I don't have the SDB but the elbow and I don't think that our 3vze ever came with the SDB you're talking about.

On my 1990 it had the squareish box thats in your pic, the one in the left upper hand corner. The elbow I replaced it with came off a 1989 removeable top 4-runner. That is show in the pic Mike took for me. Your 88 runner would have came stock with this elbow. My truck came stock with the SDB.

This made a difference for the elbow is straight throught while the SDB has this port in the center of the arch. I beleave the port to cause more turbulance which slowed the air down.

wow Dave has a really nice truck. Makes me want a 90's style truck so I can have a 3VZE.  I hope my 2.7 will keep up with Dave's 3VZE power plant.
