Need more hp out of my 22ret
« on: Apr 28, 2008, 05:27:48 PM »
I am new to toyotas and just bought a 87 ext cab srb with a 22ret and am looking for more reliable hp. Does anyone have any ideas? Exhaust, intake? I will prolly rebuild it next year but in the mean time some more hp would be nice.
Thanks

Whatever you do, don't block the vacuum line to the waste gate. I've seen where somebody did this, in fact it was mine. The PO had blocked off the line, I definitely did notice a loss in power when I hooked it back up but it was an expensive fix due to it being blocked off.

First and foremost, FUEL MANAGEMENT!  If you don't have the fuel to support the air, it won't last long.  The vane MAF engine management was good 20  years ago, but wasn't meant to be tuned at all.  Don't even waste your time screwing with adjusting the MAF to get more fuel.  It's not worth it; I know from personal experience.  If you're serious about power, and by serious, I mean if you want more than a couple HP (which you do), go with Megasquirt or some other stand alone that will either eliminate the MAF or will allow you to use a hotwire MAF and bigger injectors.  I actually prefer speed density management on a turbo engine because you're free to have as much intake length as needed to fit the application.

As for simple stuff... I'd actually do an intercooler before exhaust since the exhaust will allow you to boost higher (stock is a huge restriction) and boost quicker, it will put greater thermal loads on the engine in the sense of increased charge temps.  Once you get that done, and it can be done pretty cheaply, I'd look at a turbo back 3" exhaust.

Order of priority:

1) Proper fueling.
2) Intercooler.
3) Exhaust.

The previous owner installed a garret intercooler. Anyone make a decent exhaust?

Invest in an electronic  boost controller. Once you installed the 3" pipes whack the boost upto 12 or 13.

you are most likely going to need to get a custom exhaust built on your truck for the truck..... these upgraded systems werent designed from the factory that way and therefore wont have a bolt on kit availble for it....

find a turbo supra fuel pump, it will fit right into your tank, and im not sure what cc your injectors are, but supra turbo injectors are 440cc. u could also upgrade your ct20 turbo to a supra ct26, but the flange for the manifold is diff., u would have to build an adaptor. if u dont have the money for stand alone fuel management, get an afm off a 5mge supra, 85-86.5 and swap out the guts, it is 1/2" bigger and has 3" in and outlets

CT26 turbo is oversized for 22R.

Adding a CT26 to a 22R will create the opposite effect. Rather than an improved response you'll end up with a flatter response.

Do a google search, theres plenty of eveidence out there.

If your add the stage of wanting further hp from an already tuned 22R perhaps its time to consider engine upgrades. 1jz, 2jz or 2.7litre. The cost of an engine change will be less than the tuning costs in the long run.

if u forgot to read the previous posts, he said that it hasnt been tuned, and he wants to add power to his 22ret, not looking for a motor swap...

Yes I did read that. However, what I am stating is that by the time one has spent cash on tuning a poxy underpowered 22R engine it may as well be replaced with something a little more potent.

Of course, depends how far down the tuning scale the guy wants to go. However, take your highly tuned 22R, for what you have done you should have just put a new heart inside.

My opinion anyway.

i would condider a 3rz but the power gains would be very minimal. So i figured i could do a few things for now and then in about a year pull it rebuild it and while its out put atleast a  garret t4 turbo, lc engineering turbo header, ported head, bigger injectors. etc

The 2.7 is a vast improvement over a 22R anyday. Check on the torque and power.

By the time you have installed a garret turbo, lc engineering head, ported head and 'bigger injector', you may as well spend that hard earned cash on a better engine.

How about 1jz....bags of power? Will walk over a 22R.

I thought i read somewhere the 3rz was only 150 hp where the 22ret produces 137hp. Not much of a difference in my eyes. Plus i have been calling the wreking yards all morning just to check on prices of a 3rz and cant find anyone who has one.
