Hmm favorite tool is a toss up between my new plasma and STEP DRILL BITS!!!  They are the shizzle.  Just got a set, never used them before.  What was I thinking using std bits!!??

Those are the shizzle for thinner stuff, especially when drilling fiberglass body pieces, but they offer no depth!

These are my most used tools at work. I use them every day.

1/2"
MAX Power - 780 ft-lbs max power in reverse from a tool weighing just 3.95 lbs, the best power-to-weight ratio in its class
MAX Control - New professional touch trigger, a wider range of power regulator settings in forward, and our patented push button fwd/rev provide maximum control
MAX Reliability - designed to last and backed by a FREE two-year limited warranty*

And if that one doesnt get it loose I bought this one with it.

3/4"
Weighs just 7 lbs.
Only 8.2" long
1200 ft.-lbs. maximum torque
TwinHammer Plus mechanism for 30 percent greater durability
Contoured professional touch trigger and ergonomically designed handle for increased comfort

dude what the hell is that tool?

Yep, it is a heated tire groover.  You can buy them from any street perfomance stores for about $70 - $80.  Luckily I found this one at a yard sale brand new for $40.

I use my regular hand tools, power tools and welding/fabricating equipment all the time and really love all of them.  The "favorite" ones that come to mind for me are not used every day but are absolutely irreplaceable when they are needed.  Homefries already mentioned having one...

My "hot knife" tire groovers are worth their weight in gold and didn't cost much back when I bought them.  I've had mine for about 15 years and used them when I was dirt tracking but never would've imagined how well they work for 4wd type use.  With the right selection of blades you can cut, trim, groove and sype most any tire to improve its performance on varying terrains.

3/8 drive offset head ratchet from napa. great for those hard to reach bolts.
1/2 drive ratchet head adapter for pull handles. makes even your longest
pull handles into a ratchet. i've had this tool for over 30 years and it still
works great- another napa.
3/8 drive rechargable impact. great for trail repairs.
cheap set of metric obstruction wrenches from harbor freight. gets in them tight places.

My Gransfors Bruks Draw Knife and Forrest Axe.  These are my "favorite" tools, and I use them for log home building.

Every time I pick these up, a sense of respect and a necessity for care and craftsmanship come over me.  The nostalgia of handmade woodworking tools is just awesome, and addictive.

Hurricane, I hear ya man... except ironically i get that feeling when using power tools and imagining the TRUE craftsmen who did things by hand back in the day.  Talk about respect. With how spoiled we are with technology now, its rare to even find real craftsmen now. I wish that apprenticeship and stuff were more common these days instead of all the money-driven schools that teach a watered down, generic version of "skills". That kind of craft, perfection and art is dying off pretty quick...shame really. But i tip my hat to the work you do.

Ok... latenight rant off....    :blah:

We ain't saying power tools aren't an improvement in a craftsman's efficiency and output.  They are absolutely necessary in a modern world and a real improvement.  We're just sayin there's a point where these power tools reduced our respect for quality in favor of quantity.  The quality in craftsmanship is just not there anymore.  You can believe that has a lot to do with the elimination of apprenticeship programs and the need for master craftsmen.  There's just not a demand for this caliber of work anymore.  An accomplished carpenter back in the 1860's had about as much respect as the town doctor, if not more.  These old timey hand tools help the guys who still care, get back in touch with that respect and carry on in quality and tradition.  That's all.
