I think the difference is a dedication to make a superior product which leads to better quality and workmanship since everyone strives for this when making something in Japan.

Having owned both I can say that the American spec/built Toyota is built cheaper and more comfort based. The Japan built Toyota  has less wistles and bells and it seems to be built with a bit more quality control.
