building sliders
« on: Jan 13, 2008, 02:59:16 PM »
hey guys,

i'm building my own sliders out of 2 1/4", schedule 40 pipe, and i was wondering if anyone had any expereince in this department. me and my friend pretty much got it figured out and started on one last night however we couldn't find his saddle template and his welders were being POS so we're just taking a brake. we've got four tubes going to the frame from the main tube and then we'll have 3 bars going to the outside bar. it will look simular to what marlin and others sell. would it be better to weld it to plating and bolt the plating to the frame. some one told me that automotive frame steel will sometimes fracture when welded, which sounded weird to me because there are so many welds on it from the factory.  :flamer: :_order:  :driving:
lets not and say we did.

Ive seen it done both ways.  the only advantage IMO is the ease of removal if you bolt them on.  I've welded both sets of mine, with a 3x3 plate to the frame.  holds up fine for me. :twocents:

so should we put a plate on the end of the piping anyways to distribute stress evenly anyways or does it matter.
lets not and say we did.

I say yes...it will help keep the frame from tearing on a hard imapct.  I cut a square of 3/16" in a 3x3 and weld it on like a diamond. <>
