Number 2&3 Intake Rocker Shaft Spacer
« on: Dec 31, 2007, 10:05:21 AM »
Does anyone know where I can get the rocker shaft spacers for a toyota 22r.  If you don't know what I am talking about it is a plastic spacer that is supposed to push the number 2&3 intake rockers over the valve stem to keep them in allighnment.  Mine are worn to the point that the adjusters are more than half way off the valve stems.  The only ones I can find are from Toyota and they are in California, which means they are a week away for me because I am in Minnesota.  Or can i just cut a spacer for the spacer out of a second worn out one?  Any help is greatly appreciated because I need to have this thing running by the weekend.

the spacers on a 20R  are metal  and the same size,  you should be able  to find them in any  junkyard engine

Thanks Glenn, too late though because I went ahead and bought ones from Toyota...so I geuss I will have to wait to get the truck going.  But I have to wonder, why are these so hard to get ahold of?  Do they just rarely wear out or are people in other parts of the country just able to get ahold of them?

all the early 22r's I've had used metal spacers. even a rebuild time .. zero wear. i wonder if most of the guys with real late model 22r's even look at their valve train. :dunno:

I know I never did until after adjusting the valves many times, changing the timing chain, and I finally noticed this at the vary end of a complete engine rebuild.  I wonder I Toyota is sending me the plastic ones or the metal ones?  I read somewhere that Toyota makes a two piece one that clamps on and allows you to simply cut the old one out and put the new one in place without removing the head bolts, which would mean you should also pull the head to replace the head gasket.  Does anybody know anything about these supposed two piece replacements?

I haven't done it myself. but a few guys have removed the headbolts and rockers to change cams with out replacing the head gasket. guess ya just got to drain the water and be very careful not to brake the gasket loose.

in theory  you could just remove the  front 2  head bolts  then  slide  the  rocker  shaft  out

but  i would just remove it  and  replace it on the bench
