r 151f transmission rebuild
« on: Dec 28, 2007, 11:40:14 AM »
OK i finally found a transmission for the right price. only problem was when i picked it up it was full of rain water. should i rebuild it? I've had a few trannys apart before. i called MC up and was told i could use a r150 rebuild kit for this tranny.  looked pretty bad when i found it. almost threw it in the recycle pile. haven't finished tearing it down yet. so far the gears only look like some have light rust.

that may be a possibility. i also have a l45 and l52 cleaned and apart with good tranfercase's. and would have gone the l52hd route if it wasn't for I'm 350 miles north of Fresno.  shipping i'm sure would kill me.

well.. this weekend i'll very carfully inspect the gears and oil them so theres no futher damage. then i'll deside if it's worth it to rebuild or go l52hd. i need to inspect the tranfercase too.

so far the tranny looks rebuildable. removed the transfer adapter. found out the shifter assembly is different on a r151 than on the 93 r150. have to remove the rear screw in plug and shift lever shaft to get it a part. found destroyed shifter seat, socket and a large chunk of aluminum on the bottom of the case.  :shocking: hmm wonder where that came from??? shift fork maybe?

removed transmission case today. yes the aluminum came from the shift forks. both 1 & 2 shift forks have the leading tips broke off. on the bright side all the gears and shift shafts look good. the reverse gear has a few chips broke off on the engagement side. may be useable.. check replacement price... then decide.

actually it looks like it's the following side of the shift forks... wonder how they broke them. shouldn't be to hard to find if they're the same as the early r150. might be able to use the reverse gear if i clean it up and don't slam it into reverse.   hey i like this kind of stuff! i know it's a sickness.  :hammerhead:

OK i need 2 of these. wonder what caused this notice how the left fork is cracked by the mounting bolt. the shifter seat and socket was destroyed too. did that cause this?? this came out of a truck that saw heavy loads and lot's of coastal sand. toyota says $90.00 each for the shift forks. i'll call marlin crawler today for a rebuild kit.

parts on order.. clean and inspect.. this shift shaft was the most rusted part.. asked Toyota what it would cost.. they updated it and now it cost over $160.00.. wonder what the new style looks like??? guess I'll just use this one. anyone know what they changed?

OK installed a couple of bearing best i could with the cheap press we have. input bearing went down all the way and the snap ring fits good and tight. if ya hold it up to a real bright light you can just see a slight gap on one edge.. hmm hope thats not a problem.. i can't even fit a .001 feeler gauge in it so it must be really small and it's just on small edge. i could try pressing it more but i think it's already bottomed and i don't want to put to much force on it and screw up the synchronizer surface. also it looks like Toyota changed the shift forks. or I've got the wrong ones.. that would make things interesting..

OK no one saved me from myself..  :willynilly:  i couldn't stand that slight gap in between the input bearing and gear. it went on easy so it should come off easy right??  well even though i know you shouldn't remove them.. i pulled off the new input bearing and cleaned all the burrs off the seating surface with a fine file. pressed it back on and it sits perfect. .. so now i know and if it fails I'll know what to check for the first time.  but i feel lucky.  :crossed:

thanks I'll do that.. right now I'm getting ready to spend some more on parts. got to price check a few gears.. input shaft and 3rd gear look look like they have some heavy wear. plus i think I'll replace the needle bearings..   maybe I'll luck out and I'll get a deal on the price.

sweet.... I got started on mine last night finally.... got the case pulled off and started cleaning things up so I  can do some inspection of all the parts... mine appears to have been apart recently she has fresh sealant and the bearings look brand new so I think I may have lucked out... I will still do some more inspection and be sure everything is in good shape.... have fun with yours bro

I'd like to keep the 4.31 first gear ratio with the r151, but if everything looks good with the r150,  i might use it instead with the 3.83 first gear. but i have to check it out first.

i pulled the r150 apart. looks real good except for the reverse gears. guess I'll use this gear set, replace the bearings and use the r151 case and r151 transfer case. yeah the shift assemblies are different but i measured them and it looks like they well work.

could be i drive that truck everywhere. going to finish the rest of the cab paint job after the rains slow down this season. ran into a little snag with the tranny rebuild. chipped gear. i might still use it anyway. i know just as soon as i get it in the truck, I'll find a cheap r150f or a r151f counter gear. so I've slowed on this until i finish installing the Aussie in my 4.56 90's rear axle. what did you decide to do with your timing chain?

Had to be the same truck BFG's with aluminum rims, it sits up higher than in the avatar.
Decided to take the truck to Paul's. When I thought about where his shop is i realized I had been there before. He worked on our Chevy when I was kid and did some work for my friends parents too. I'm gonna drop my rig off there in the morning.
Guess I will have the whole thing rebuilt bored 20 over with a 260 grind cam.   :woohoo:
Gonna be pricey but shouldn't have to worry about it for a while.  :beerchug:
