first of all, I have no idea what I am talking about.  now that that is out of the way, here is the problem.  My truck pops out of 1st and 3rd gear.  not when under power, but when I let off the gas.  It isnt too much of a problem, because I have gotten into the habit of holding it in place with my knee, and I an do that wheelin and everything else.  I know that bushing at the bottom of the shifter could be it, but that bushing is fine.  Couldl it be the shift forks being worn out?  Other than that, the tranny runs smooth and shifts fine.  Should I have it rebuilt?  just do the forks? or am I hurting anythign driving it how it is?  It doesnt bother me, and I would rather do some mods to my truck, but I dont want to damage anything further.  any help?

Prolly the tranny sincroes(sp?).  Thats what holds it in gear and allows the smooth shifting.  I can't downshift from 4th into 3rd because of my sincro is out.  But i got use to shifting it into 2nd and then up into 3rd.

how hard are they to change out? is it worth it?

I have no idea.  I have never torn into a tranny before and don't even know what the sincroes look like.

Uncle Jesse

If you are gong to replace synchros then you might as well get bearings and replace them at the same time.  Replacing sychros means removing the case down to just the middle plate, then pressing all of the gears, collars, synchros off of the main shaft.  So, you will need a few special hand tools, and of course a press.

hey, join the club!!

As long as I'm not hurting anything, I think I'll leave it alone for now
got more important things to do, like an SAS   If I have to drive holding my shifter in place with my knee, so be it as long as I'm not hurting anything
