TRD e-locker install...85 SFA
« on: Dec 06, 2007, 06:33:07 PM »
Well its time for Goldmember to be double locked....I got a TRD e-locker for a steal, regeared it, replaced the bearings, and then it sat in my garage for 4 months....

Not anymore

Today I tore down my front axle, and prepped it for the 3rd member...

Hope I can figure out where all the parts go

out with the old..in with the new

Marking the modified areas

Test fits pretty good

I ran out of steam this afternoon, so the saga will continue.....

How much can I get for an open 4cyl third with brand new Yukon 4.88 gears and bearings??

Nice. Do you have to call to get the wiring harness? I did not see it on the website, just the fancy switch plate. Was the wiring harness a direct hook up? Was it easy? Thanks for any info, I am wanting to do this to my truck sometime.

I saw this on Pirate the other day and thought this looked like the first elocker conversion that didn't make it seem that difficult.  What did you end up using to modify the housing?  On the pirate post it looks like some careful grinding for the clearance.  Did you use anything fancy to drill the stud holes?  Drill press?  milling machine?  pistol drill?  Got any tips on this?  I'll be doing both my housings soon enough (I've seen the trick with the countersink screws next to the spring perch)

Almost forgot from the other thread, do you think the timing is an issue or is it all just working?  thanks

All the sites I've seen about it make it sound like your truck will explode if you don't get it perfect. :willynilly: :gap:

The locker seems to work great. I will take it to the rocks in a couple weeks to really test it.

I just took my time with all the steps. I used my angle grinder to make the modifications, a buddy of mine welded the housing for the long studs, and used the 3rd to help line up the holes. I used my cheapo Black and Decker drill once I had it all lined up.

I followed this writeup....

Was the 12voltguy setup the whole thing, the elocker harness, controller, and switch?  How much did that run, if you don't mind me asking?

I just aquired an elocker, and am researching my options and the steps required to put it in a front axle

Thanks!

I would just get in touch with 12voltguy. He is super cool, and it was a good deal. I used my locker quite a bit last weekend and it works great.

Did you have any problems with the elocker skidplate?  The top corner seems like it would need to be clearanced but I can't see in your pictures.  I just ordered skids front and rear for my elockers, not sure if the front is going to work or not yet.

Just got mine in the mail, it looks like they're going to work.  I was thinking they were going to that top right hole (that usually needs to be clearanced on front elockers), but that would be dumb.  Now I just need the wiring.

Hey Marc, I just saw your this write-up.  I'm in the middle of doing my marlin front suspension/hysteer and I just got my front axle housing flange all modded up and ready for the new e-locker my friend is re-gearing.  Did you have to beat from the inside out on the front of the housing to get it to clear the ring gear?  I've read some write-ups for the installing a e-locker in the rear and people have had to do this.  I also like the counter sunk bolt trick.

Hey Tim...glad to hear your rig is coming together. I did have to pound on the housing a bit. The large diff cover I have hides it well.

I have been on quite few runs since the install, and it works flawlessly. I am running birfields, so I am careful.

I like your use of the furniture dollies.  I think I will borrow some from work to build my front axle up on.  I need the manueverability in my garage.

Cool, I'm just waiting on my buddy to finish re-gearing my 3rd's and they are going in the already modified housings.

Maxwe001, can I use some factory toyota switches with the Inchworm e-locker wirring?

The kit inchworm sells has a switch that has 6 little plugs on the back so as long as it has 6 plugs I am going to say YES
