Greenhorn is right in GV ish and its pretty sick I think. Thats where the Cal4wd snow run is held and lots of people go there and I see snow run pics from the winter fun fest and it looks pretty cool....

I dont know, id rather go to High lakes then GV though
The Sunday river Bottom Games are held at Greenhorn, not the Snow runs.  The Snow runs are all held on PG&E property that is opened up to the Winterfest only.

Fordyce is a nice run and can be treacherous through the tight section halfway between Driveline hill and the fiurst creek x-ing comming in from Eagle Lakes exit, which is the only route open to 4x4'x once the snow falls.  The Cisco Grove entrance to Fordyce lake is closed due to dangerous terrain on the downhill side to the lake, and the Meadow lake side trails are for snowmobiles only.  The other problem w/Fordyce is that Mid-winter deep snow runs can take hours just getting to driveline hill so unless you are planning a weekend trip it might not be that fun.

If you run High lakes, you might think about setting up camp up at the "T" if you have more than 10 rigs planning to camp, Spring Valley gets a little tight in the snow with a large group, same with Long/Cambell.

Theres plenty of room at Spring Valley for lots of rigs. We arent staying up there anyway but if we were to We could fit a lot of people right after you go downhill on the trail up the little "creek" crossing right there where a lot of people camp.

Do you have lockers? Experience in the snow? Been to the highlakes?

Its really gay wheeling with people that cant wheel for :pokinit: and get stuck every place so if people have bigger then 35s and dont know how to wheel in the snow, its still just as gay.

Having a huge group of people wheelin with one guys stuck that has smaller tires is a big pain in the ass. People with 37s even have troubles sometimes.

Now LilBuddy you know most of us didn't start out snow wheelin with 35's and lockers, and you know that even well equipped rigs cause long delays on the trail, not to mention all the other people who will likely be up there getting in the way, unless you come in Friday night.  We have been delayed hours just getting Fernando or Pat out of a hole like this one of his Std cab on 37" krawlers

Ya that area is good size during the Summer but I have noticed once you get a couple of rigs in there and get tents/winter shelter set-up it starts to get tight, especially when there is only 3-4' of snow.  However once it gets a good 8' or so you can camp pretty much anywhere, all of the brush is well below the snow.

You could also set-up to camp at the cabin if you weren't planning to return to party in Chico later.  I haven't been the cabin since it was fixed up, Pat said it wqsn't to bad if you didn't want to tent camp.

Did you here that Pat did a 240* roll w/the Rover.  He and Mike were comming back from Morris at night and Pat said the next thing he knew the Rover was on its side in the brush on the downhill side of the trail above Campbell Lake.  fortunately it was a slow roll and only broke a side window and of course cracked the windshield.

I actually havent really been up to date with pat/fernando/mike lately at all.

I dont think were going to camp up there so it souldnt be a problem about camping arrangements.

Yeah. Highlakes sounds cool I have never been there though.
Great place to snow wheel, camp.  It is one of the few areas that is open to 4x4's in the winter.  Here in the Tahoe forest everything but the Eagle Lakes entrance to Fordyce Creek trail is closed once the snow falls, same with the Sierra NF.  You can wheel as far in as Fuller lake off of hwy 20 heading into Grouse Ridge but no further.  However there is supposed to be an old trail(washed out) that comes in from the Washington side to  Bowman that wasn't closed at the time(ten yrs ago) according to the Rangers that cited us for being on the road, eventhough the signs and gates were under 14' of snow at the time.  The road into Granitville can be a good run once the snow falls on it, though I don't know if you are allowed to wheel past into Bowman from that side or not.

When we rolled up there was a jeep stuck in the same hole.  Pat had to show up the jeep and just as he enterdd the whole area collapsed.

The roll happeded just a few weeks ago.  they had planned to go to Fordyce to get a run in before the snow fell, but couldn't get anyone to commit to going that far.  As it was just him mike fernando and i think brad went.  The good news is he found out that the entire top of the rover is removeable, so is considering a possible canvas style top and roll cage, that is of course if he keeps it.  i am thinking the portals are going to end up under something else, either a late model 4.3 ST10 blazer or a 3.4 Runner(if the price is right).  He really doesn't care much for the under powered ford engine that is in it right now

I have never actually gone along with the Cal 4 wheel group on their snow run so I dont know where exactly they go but there are probably a couple dozen if not more miles of trails up on you bet road and all around greenhorn. I have a two buddies that lives way up there and they always finds good trails to go on that otherwise you would never know about. it can get pretty nasty though in some places we were going through at least 4 feet. I had 35s and open difs when I went and it got tricky at times but I never got stuck.  :driving:

Back in the mid'late '90's my buddy's and I went on a few when it was run by GV 4x4's, then it only cost $35-40/person and you were fed better for the weekend than if you went out and bought $40 worth of food.  However since Cal4wd took the run over and prices went to $120/person(though prices have come down some) we have stopped going, to expensive.  With 8 of us going the cost was getting close to $1k for the weekend, we don't spend half that much when we go wheeling/camping for 3 days as a group, so id just didn't seem worth iot to continue wheeling the Winterfest.  If they price included a nice sweatshirt we probably would still be attending, it was fun when there was a lot of snow.

Yep my buddies and I wheeled w/open diffs and 31/32's in the snow for years, you really don't need lockers, they are nice to have but not necessary.  A lot of times we would wheel right past rigs w/35's and MT's that were stuck on the trail.  The main thing with snow is low psi, sub 5psi.  We usually start out at about 10psi and the drop it from there depending on the snow, packed trail or fresh.  Flotation is your friend when you can't dig to tera firma.  The run out to Fuller lake is fun when the snow is fresh, a better place to dink around is there at Eagle Lakes road, there are usually a lot of people out there getting stuck.

Any man, in the right situation, is capable of murder. But not any man is capable of being a good camper.....So, murder and camping are not as similar as you might think.

Some men are alive simply because it is against the law to kill them.

Haha screw paying for the Winter funfest, I dont go on their "trail run" but I still attend every year and my buddies and I just go wheel where we want. We all live here so we dont need to hear some historic mumbo jumbo we already know and pay for trails we run all the time :D

We havnt gotten a cm of snow here yet so hopefully the Funfest wont be a bust this year. I am looking foreward to just wheeling snow, funfest or not though
