Thanks guys!    Yeah, the screen name just came to me.  I did two years with a '98 Tacoma, so I figured I did my time and earned the right to laugh at IFS rigs. 

Project update:  A friend spun a rod bearing in the 22RE in his '86 4Runner, so we went half in on an $800 '87 4Runner that was going to be a parts truck (he gets the block, doors, rear tail gate, I get the head, EFI stuff, t-case and IFS steering box), but as it turned out, it's in better shape than his '86, so the '86 is going to be the parts truck.  This coming weekend, I'll remove the head and EFI junk, and start transferring it over to my '81.

I got the 22RE, tranny, t-case, and engine and dash harness pulled today.  What a mess.  Sludge all over the place and more wire than I know what to do with.  Tomorrow will see the t-case removed from the tranny, the tank will come out, and I'll begin to clean and tear down the engine.

Unless its got an 84 head. If it has an 84 head then the holes for the efi are drilled and tapped. If it has an 83 head on it then it has it where you can still drill and tap the head and itd work but its not drilled and tapped stock.

Sure it will.  If you swap an '86 block in under that EFI head.  Which is what I'm doing. 

I tore the engine down today and started cleaning everything.  I think there's about as much oil OUTSIDE this engine as there's supposed to be INSIDE.  It's going to have to be honed at the least, maybe bored .020 over, depending on what the machine shop thinks about the scores in #2 and #3.  Nope, no pics yet.

I only needed a parts truck... and at $800 split between a friend and I, I'm pretty happy.    He is too, because he got an almost non-rusty '87 that runs great.

Engine Builder RV head, 261 cam and master rebuild kit are coming this week.  It was decided to bore it .020 over to make sure that the bores are round.

up in the mountains, comeing and going down in the valleys. when we were at providence 3 weeks ago it was about 8-12" deep.

that is the only thing i miss about utah The snow!!!!!  it is like 70*+ out here it sucks doesn't even feel like fall! let alone we are almost to winter!

haha snow and really cold weather is wierd for me over long periods of time. i'm used to south east texas (houston). winter time usually consists of 40-70 during the days (usually mid-high 50's) and lows in the 30's, sometimes 20's.

my worst experiance with cold weather was last january when i had to replace the carb and distributor in my 81 gmc pickup. single digits with the snow falling and i was huddled up inside the engine bay out on the street. COLD!!!!!!!

yup sounds familiar, I had to change the fuel filter on my blazer in the road with plows goin by I used to live in Kaysville and Brigham City I was just out there not that long ago I have family out there and visit every once in a while but it is a long trip in an 85 toy lol

how long of a trip? long trips really are a whole lot better in a fullsize vehicle, expecially a suburban. i've driven 1200 miles in a suburban by myself a few times (tooele utah to midland texas), and drove 2000 miles in the 4runner (tooele to houston). never doing that trip again in the 4runner.

27 year old 22R finally coming out.



It rests next to the L50 transmission, waiting to donate various manifold studs and assorted fasteners to the fresh 22RE.  And completely unrelated- my lawnmower displaces about as much as both my and my wife's scooters combined.

Two transfer cases... the clean one is from an '86 4Runner and will be the rear case, while the dirty one is the original 27 year old case which will be cleaned and converted to the crawl box.

Nah.  I'm going to try dual stock gears first to see how I like it.  I figure it like this- if I just went with gears in a single, I'll have 4.7 and that's it.  If I have dual stocks, I'll have the option of either 2.26 for not so crazy sections, or 5.11 for more technical stuff.  If that's still not low enough, I can always go 4.7 in the rear box later on.

Either way, I'll be going from a 34:1 crawl ratio to a 106:1 ratio, so it's going to be a HUGE improvement.

Nice progress. You are going to be stoked on the duals. Even though its been 8 months or more since I put mine in, every time I take it out I forget how freakin' awesome it is.

When I ordered my 3rds and other stuff from Marlin about a month ago, they were out of stock on the leafs for the lift, the knuckle rebuild kits and a few other parts.  Now, I called back today, and they're out of bump stops, shackle spacers and spring plates for the kits and they didn't know when they'd have the stuff back in stock.  So I ordered my stuff from All Pro. 

HEY MARLIN!  QUIT CANNIBALIZING YOUR LIFT KITS!  YOU JUST LOST A $2000 ORDER!

I shoulda just done this a month ago so I'd be that much further along on my project.  The turtle is a fitting avatar of their business ethic.

Thanks!  I was screwing with the tranny a bit before it went in- turning the input shaft by hand and watching how slowly the drive shaft flanges turned.  I can't wait.  :-D 

More power indeed.  That's an Engine Builder RV head and 261 cam there sitting on a block bored .020 over with all brand new internals.  In fact, the only things on that engine not cast in this century are the valve cover, oil pan, block, main caps and intake manifold.    Either way, it's a hell of a lot more power than the old 27 year old 22R.
