Project LOL @ IFS
« on: Oct 09, 2007, 04:38:46 PM »
'81 SR5 (I think).  It has a 4" lift courtesy of add-a-leafs (PO mod) and the 33's and wheels from my Taco.  I have all the plastic for the headlights and grill, and that'll go on once I build some bumpers.  I'm not going to do a whole lot... just 5.29's and HP e-lockers, Marlin lift kit, dual or triple cases (we'll cross that bridge when we get to it), My-T-FI, header, exhaust.  Yup.  :)

As I got it, but with the Taco wheels and tires.  Check out that sweet flex... I think the IFS on my Taco has more travel:

Shift knob and CB installed.  It's a blast to drive.   :hammerhead:

And here's the new paint.  I liked Big Mike's two tone so much, I used it as inspiration.  $30 worth of spray paint, masking tape and newspapers.  I used 1.5 cans of black and 2.5 cans of "army green."  It's not quite olive drab, but close enough.  I was going for a 50/50 paint job, and it came out a TON better than I'd hoped for.  What you see is one coat without any clear or wax.  :)

So that's it for now.  I'm planning on building the bumpers before I deply, and if I'm able to do more, so be it.  When I come back, I pretty much plan on doing everything I listed.  :)

Thanks guys.  I'm just as impressed as you are with the paint.  :)  The two tone wasn't my idea... I liked how Big Mike's truck looked with the blue and white, but didn't want to COPY it, persay.  I vowed that my next "project" would be olive drab, but that changed with my decision to two tone it.  I'm not done... I'm going to add some subtle stripes that I think will accentuate the lines a bit more.  If you like it so far, I think you'll like the stripes I have in mind.  :)

And yes, Yota_Krawler, Utah.  I'm stationed at Hill AFB, and those pictures were taken at the north end of the base, overlooking Ogden.  Are you in Utah?

What brand paint did you use?  Every job I've ever seen out of a can looks like hell with drips and such and isn't shiny at all.

I know exactly what you're talking about, and I agree with you...

As for the type of paint I used... you guys aren't going to believe it, but it was the cheapest :pokinit: I could find.  I used this for the green and this for the black.  1.5 cans of black and 2.5 cans of green.  :)

Thanks guys.  I've had a few people ask me for tips and how I did it, so I figured I'd post it here.

I'd like to preface this by saying I've never had an autobody class, nor painted a car/ truck before.  This is only what I did, and if there's some of you that can add to this, feel free, because I really don't have any more info than what follows.  :)

I removed the tail lights, corner lights (the four small ones on the side), mirrors, 4WD emblems, and wiper arms.

Then I wet sanded the whole thing with 500 and sanding blocks, and used green scotchbrite where the blocks couldn't get.  I then washed the whole truck and used a damp cloth to remove any left over dust.

The grille was already off, so I just draped some newspaper over the lights and taped it up, and then masked off the door handles, door locks, wiper studs, and used newspaper to cover the windows and sunroof.  To do that, you want to go around the border with some tape and a razor, and then tape the newspaper down.  Any seams where the newspaper overlaps (like on the windshield) will need to be taped.  I sprayed the black first, left all the masking on, and then taped up the line for the green.  Run a single strip where you want the line (put the tape on the "black side" of where you want the line to be), and then tape newspaper down to protect from overspray.  I didn't do this, and I kind of wish I did, but oh well.

As far as painting itself...  You want to use even, steady strokes.  Don't speed up or slow down while spraying, and don't hold down on the nozzle when you stop and change direction.  Let off, start going back, and start spraying again.  If you hold down while you stop and change direction, you'll get a run.  If you do get a run, you can do one of two things... you can either wipe it up right there and spray over it, or you can let it dry and sand it down and hit it again later.  I personally don't care about runs on a trail rig, so I didn't do either.  I didn't know this 'till afterwards, but they make trigger things that go on spray paint cans so you're not pressing down on the nozzle.  I wish I knew this beforehand, because my index fingers hurt for a few hours after the job.

Not really sure what you'd call mild or...?  I'm planning dual or triple t-cases, 5.29 HP E-lockers at both ends, a 4" lift, 35's, York OBA, bumpers, sliders (those steps are tacked in and are junk), and maybe a 4.3 swap.  I'm torn on the engine... Do I keep the 22R and throw parts at it, or do I say the hell with it and get it over with and do a 4.3...?  I have about seven months to think about that, so I'm not in a hurry.  :)

Yes, I do have the grill and bezles... I'm going to build a bumper before I put them in, though, because I don't have a place to put the turn signals otherwise.

engine should accomidate the terrain... it really depends on what your plans are for this truck.

Rock Crawling?  my 22R turns the 42's perfectly fine over anything and everything I want it too... its all about gear reduction.

Sand?  Mud?   now your looking more along the lines of wheel speed, more HP.

X2 on that, where did you get it I would like one myself?

I bought a surplus grenade and welded it to my shifter.  There's two types readily available to me...

If you want to send me your shifter and $30 for my time to drive a half hour to get the grenade, the cost of the grenade, and welding it together, I'd be happy to do it up for you.  The pineapple grenade (the one I used) is about 2.5 lbs or so and makes shifting a TON easier.  It literally falls into the next gear.  The baseball grenade (smooth round one) is a little lighter and a little wider; I might use it as the t-case shifter, but my tranny shifter bushing is worn so it'd hit the baseball grenade if it were on the t-case stick.

Shamb- I guess I do both.  Not so much mud because it's a PITA to wash afterwards, but there's been times when my 3RZ in the Taco has barely had the power I've needed to climb a long steep hill (upwards of 45 degrees or as long as 1/4 mile).  I guess a 4.3 is in my future, then.  :)
