I was actually on the edge of the trinity alps today.  I wanted to go in and hunt a hillside below monument peak, but the snow was coming down about 3,000 feet below that so it was out of the question.

Funny thing was, of the 13 deer I saw today I never saw one while hiking.  All were spotted while driving the truck.  The buck just stood there waiting for me to shoot him, just kept ambling about for a couple minutes before going over the side of the hill.  That's the hardest time cause it gives you time to second guess yourself.

Sorry Nate I was thinking of 798 :smack: I like the 788 too, pretty accurate rifle from the good old days of Remington

:yesnod:  that's why I bought another in .308

Pat, I'm already getting that "what the hell were you thinking?" feeling, but I have 7 more days to hunt, so  :crossed:

Sadly, I've been pounding the trails and roads behind locked gates and seen absolutely no deer.  All the deer I've seen so far were while driving.  I'm hoping for more rain/snow  :crossed:

I've been looking at the 798 too, just outa curiosity.  I think I might lean toward a ruger if I were to buy a rifle right now.  I'd really like a gun that holds up better to bad weather.

I like the Rugers too  but Ive heard too negative comments about accuracy, but supposedly the new trigger is supposed to address that. I might get a 77 Hawkeye in 308

Interesting, but they can't possibly match the out of the box inaccuracy of the browning A bolt  :ack:  I like the .243 and 25 wssm calibers, but can't see dropping all that money on a gun that has such poor groups!

I love when I go to sight in the 788 before deer season, go to check out my group and :headscratch: when I can't find a hole, then notice a slight tear on the edge of one of the holes.  Happens every year  :haha:

Forgot to mention I saw another bear yesterday.  I was working along the backside of a hill, noticed movement just below me and out pops a bear maybe 25 feet below me.  He was walking at a quick pace and kept smelling the air...... mighta smelled the food in my truck :yikes:  Kinda cool cause I watched and followed for a minute and he never knew I was there.

Today started off slow, then I saw 10 deer in about 10 minutes.  Kept having to check out one doe cause her head was frickin huge.  I parked at an old skid road and noticed a truck go by just after I started walking down it.  Within 5 minutes of leaving my truck I heard a shot :shake:  Stuck around for a few minutes, but the kids coudn't find the buck before I left.

Heading back to that general area tomorrow again.  I saw more tracks around there than I'd seen all day.  It's where I shot a nice buck and HAD to pass on the biggest buck I've ever seen just after.  I'm gonna wear my boots out there tomorrow

It got to be too much trouble/hassle and I gave up today.  I've seen atleast 50 deer, only one was a legal buck and another barely had nubs.  My knees and hips just can't take the abuse anymore.

Saw 2 more bears today though.  First one was atleast several hundred yards away and I couldn't really tell how big it was, but the second one was barely bigger than a small dog.  It was running as fast as it could and looked like a little black ball of fur :haha:  MAYBE 30 pounds, but it's hard to say.

I may go out another day locally before the season ends, but my knees need a day of rest.

Come on, bring on the dirt bike wreck pics!  Come on.  I ride and wreck all the time, too.  My buddy does it even more, because he's always doing wheelies up rough hills and stuff.

Post up and maybe blur the worst parts or something?

And I think ya'll already seen the bird I killed with my street bike.

that's not a park bench, it's a decoy to trick the deer, the crazy bird lady comes as an option.

lol it seems to have worked so props on the kill

if i get bear tags in the next year or two ill bring a stuffed doll or a kid and place it out there petting a fake cub...might bag a big one

I've seen 3 bears in as many days man, it was kinda weird!

Good job pat, looks a lot like the one I passed on, just a little taller.

Went out again today and there were people everywhere.  Took off down a road behind a locked gate and found nothing.  Went to a different ridge and took another walk.  There's a road below, and if you know where to drop down you can walk the ridge and come out at the end of the road.  I was getting bored walking the ridge and decided to drop down early, finding a wooded ridgeline with an open floor.  Twigs and branches everywhere, no way was I going to be quiet, not to mention the wind was blowing like crazy and spreading my scent all directions.

I heard the sound..... something taking off like a bat outa hell, the sound you know is made by a fleeing deer.  Just barely caught a glipmse of an ass, then saw another full deer but couldn't see the rack.  Nice fat neck, head held back and bounding down the hill.  Saw his tracks and :yikes: , they were huge, probably biggest I'd ever seen!  I think I'll be going back sunday.

There's some blm land down the road from me that recently got gated off.  I'll possibly be taking a walk down there tomorrow (or sunday if I don't go back to the other place) and see if I can't jump something up.
