2wd 4runners?
« on: Sep 29, 2007, 03:05:50 PM »
I went into NAPA today, and was looking through a catalog, and one of the vehicles was 2wd 4runner. It was listed as 85-89, I think. Did Toyota ever produce a 2wd 4runner in the first gen (runner) style? Just curious. If they do exist, any pics?

My bro-in-law had a 2nd gen 2wd 4Runner. I don't have any pic's but it looks like the 4wd (of course) but it sits just as high as the 4wd. When he told me that it was 2wd & told him he's full of  :pokinit: It had no 4wd stuff on it  ??? That was the first & last one I had ever seen  :screwy:

I knew that there were 2nd gen 2wd, I just was not aware of 1st gen 2wds. I have never seen a 1st gen 2wd, but I have seen the 2nd gen 2wds.

If that was introduced in the spring of 1989, it was a 2nd gen and considered a 1990 even though it was released in 1989.  Usually, the next year stuff is released in August unless it's a completely redesigned model - at least in the toyota world.

A guy I went to college with had a second gen 2 door 2wd 4-runner with a 22re in it!  I can't remember if it was auto or manual trans though.

I am asking about the first body style (84-89) , not the second (mid 89-whatever). I know that there are alot of different options for the second gen 4runners. I was just under the impression that there were no 2wd 84-89 4runners.

It was some acessories catalog, I wasn't at an actual NAPA store, I was at a NAPA Autocare Center. The store is on the other side of town. It had a listing like 84-89 2- and 4-wheel drive Pickups and 4runners. I don't believe it was a NAPA catalog, it was probably some accesories company catalog. It was just a strange listing that caught my interest, thats all. Do you work at NAPA Duffil? Do you get good discounts? I think I might want to work there some day, I love NAPA almost as much as Toyotas.

OK, that listing makes sense...they are grouping it as [2&4WD pickups] and[4runners]

I pay 10% over cost...it's good, but not as cheap as one would think. It does help out a bunch when I do side jobs...I pay C+10...charge the customer a good price, and make money on parts and labor.

Go for it.  I will tell you that number recognition/retention is very important. I would rather take a guy who knows nothing about cars but can retain information over a guy who can tell you anything about any car ever made.  I can teach a guy all that.
It also helps to be able to work on things if you want to be a good parts guy.  Since you're on the forum I'll assume that you can. I work with 2 lazy bastards...one of them always has me do his brakes, the other guy did an engine swap in a 90s Mustang and fried the wiring and computer while doing it.

I am still young and learning. Just look at my knuckle rebuild post. It has taken like a month to get as far as I am. Maybe I am not quite ready for NAPA yet (Autozone, here I come! NOT!). I think I will wait until I finish collage, and see where life takes me. Thanks for the info though!

:yikes: He fried the whole thing? Atleast I can swap and engine without frying stuff!

All 84-88 4Runners were 4x4's it wasn't until the second gen that they came out with the station wagon option.

Yes.   :)   But I still say that it's not a real 4Runner.  Avoid this   :stopit:   like the plague and repeat after me...

There were no first gen 2wd 4runners. But most parts stores will ask if you 84-89 4runner is 2 or 4 wheel drive. Their computers are non compos mentis.

I guess I'm responding a bit late, but I work at NAPA and Im only 17.
It is true, you do have to have a good idea of what a lot of things are and what they go to. Im still learning though. Something new every day. And my discouts (just a geuss) range from like 10% to like 40%.

I bought some Sea Foam yesterday for $5.50 when normal price is like $9.45 I think
