how do you ID what type of 22 you have?
« on: Sep 19, 2007, 07:48:05 PM »
How can you tell the difference on what type of 22 motor you have. The reason that i'm asking is that the truck that i have now has 2 water lines running where the oil filter goes. I never seen that before. The motor was supposed to be a 22R-TE. I still have the turbo but not on the motor. The motor was in pieces when i got it. I want to convert it to a 32/36 webber. Since i'm only going to use it as a daily driver and sumtimes to the beach. Can somebody shed sum light for me please! Mahalo and Aloha.

On the left side of the block at the front near the bottom there is a rectangular casting which should say 22R, 22RE or 22RE-T.

remove the oilfilter  and there should be i think a 22mm  nut  . remove it  and that adapter  for the  turbo cooler   should come off  and  leave a  mount for the oil filter

btw  yes  thats  a  22RTE  block

and yes  with a  carb intake  from a  85-89 22R  you can make it a  carbed  engine,  BUT  its gonna be a dog  since the turbo engines had a  lower compression

whats wrong with the  turbo  and  cpu ??

Nothing is wrong with the turbo. I'm thinking of putting it in my rambler runner. What do you mean that it's going to run like a dog?

it wont have proper compression... that block was designed to function with a turbo......

regular 22R and 22REs operated at a higher compression.
so making that TRE a Carb.... will be very doggy and be like driving my old 22RE with bad rings, fouled spark plugs, and running on 2 cyls.

i have driven one that was converted before...... POS! i would HIGHLY recomment not doing it.
clean up the turbo system.
and rebuild the original system and engine.

Is the compression in the head or the whole motor. What if i change the head?

The same side of the oil filter.

Other side is the left side, everthing is left and right when you are sitting in the driver seat. As far as the compression goes its the pistons that are different.

What's funny is that when i run the vin at the Toyota dealer the motor came from the factory carburated. I don't know the history of the truck, so i dont know if he did a whole complete swap. I know the trans is a turbo from the stamp. I looked on the left side of the block to see if it had the 22R, 22RE, OR 22RT-EC. The damn thing only says 22R. I even looked at my injected 22re and it only has 22r. I'm just going to run the carb and see what happens. I'm just using this as my daily driver, so we see what happens. Thanks everybody for the 411 on this subject. Mahalo and Aloha.
