Differential question -
« on: Aug 25, 2007, 08:18:49 AM »
What is the rear axle shaft length of an IFS rear end.  What I have is 24 5/8" from the shelf that the inner wheel bearing race sits on to the end of the shaft.  The total shaft length (farthest point to farthest point) is 26 5/8".

My question is regarding a slightly modified rear axle assembly.  I am using stock 4.56 gears in a standard third member in an IFS rear end.  I have the assembly together at this point, but something does not seem right.

I installed the rims and with the complete axle resting on the ground, turning the input shaft flange does nothing.  It acts as if it is "free wheeling".

Basically, if I had it installed under the vehicle, applying power to the driveshaft would not turn the wheels.  It would simply spin.

What it feels like it that the driver's side axle shaft is not engaging the splines.  Hopefully I am explaining this so it makes a little sense.

Answered my own question -

There is a distinct difference in length between the 1981 axle shaft and the 1986+ axle shaft.  Looks like another trip to the parts yard!   :-\

Anyone have the length for the stock 1986+ axle shaft?

yep 3 inches,  if  you try to put a  early shaft in a ifs housing  you'll get what you got,  NUTTIN  cause the  shafts just barely touches  the  side gears

Thanks for the replies everyone.  Anyone have a spare 1986+ 4WD rear axle shaft they would be willing to part with?

Also, I have two stock pre 86 shafts.
