Welding differential
« on: Mar 26, 2013, 10:59:01 AM »
I know there is a lot of info on this topics covering this. But I was simply wondering what would be a better way to weld this, Mig or flux core? Thanks

I was planning on pulling everything out of the housing, is that a good idea or a waste of time?  And will de-greaser and brake cleaner get it clean enough? Thanks for the input

if by "housing" you mean the 3rd member, i would say yes its a waste of time to take everything out.  i welded mine while it was all still in the 3rd.  yes de-greaser and brake cleaner will get it clean enough, but be careful when welding and try your hardest to not breath in the fumes.  There is an article that pops up every once and a while about a guy that welded on something after cleaning it with brake cleaner.  apparently the mix of the brake cleaner an argon fumes did severe damage to his lungs.  but i dont recall the details on this story.  it may have been because he used the old chlorinated style of brake cleaner.

Be very very careful about using brake cleaner. You want non chlorinated, if you use the regular chlorinated and any amount, like a drop or less can create a gas that can kill you or ruin your health for the rest of your life. While welding that is.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Thanks guys. You could have saved me a lot of trouble. I finally have another DD so I can start upgrading my stock 4runner. Pretty basic stuff but I should probably just start a build thread when I have time. Thanks again

MIG is cleaner but it doesn't really matter.  Its not like anyone is going to be looking at it.  Get plenty of heat in it or put a piece of steel between the gears to make it stronger if you plan to rod it.

The chlorine vapour mixed with ultraviolet light makes phosgene gas (mustard gas)

Weld everything to everything with all the bits as clean as you can make them, then let it cool down real slow so it doesn't harden. I thow mine in a bed of coals banked with ash in the wood stove and let it cool over like 8 hours.  Probably overkill but we've never had one fail.
