Fuel filter mount location?
« on: Aug 22, 2007, 01:02:57 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble finding where to mount the fuel filter at on my '85 22re.  I rebuilt the thing about a year ago, and just left the filter hanging for awhile... but I just now remembered I did that!  :circle:  Anyway, I have the mount off, and I'm trying to find the place to bolt it on.. I'm pretty sure it mounts to the block, but I can't match up any of the holes.  Does anyone happen to have a picture of the mount mounted, or possibly be able to describe where it goes?

thanks for any help.

-Nick

Passenger side of the block between the starter and the oil filter.

Yup, squat at the back of your passenger tire and look in at the motor.  There will be two holes lined up vertically...follow your fuel line and you should be able to get a good look at where it should go the bolt holes...look in to what would appear to be a big PITA to get too and that should be it.

Have fun! I have only replaced them with the motor out of the truck. Should be interesting doing it in the truck though...

It can be done..........

It's easier without the starter in the way, and you work thru the wheel well.........

those fuel filters are as a PITA as unbolting the bellhousing from the top of the block.
i hate the fuel filters.

That's how I did it...through the wheel well.  It took me about 30 min mainly because my hands are big...kept dropping the top bolt from my finger tips (I didn't have to take anything off...be patient and you won't get frustraited...naturally).

The bolts holding the filter to the engine are much easier than getting those banjo bolts on (and not having the copper washers drop off.......)

You have to visualize the filter and it's mount!  Be one with the filter and bolts!  It's like making, :bumpinbutts:  you don't need the lights on!   :rofl2:

You'll need a 12mm socket and a 17mm end wrench!

Or just do what I did and cut out your fender until you can reach it easily. :gap:

The filter is bolted onto a metal bracket that mounts to the block, but i think it's a lousy location...you might not change the filter often but it gets in the way when you're trying to get to the starter.

Just use a hex-head self-tapping screw and mount it to the middle of the stiffener bracket that goes between the EFI manifold and the passenger side motor mount...the hoses are long enough to reach and it's out of the way.
