Advice for front hub removal
« on: Jul 07, 2007, 01:49:38 PM »
I have an 82 SR5 22R (purchased in 83, 2nd owner) that I need to do a brake job on.  I've never replaced the front rotors so I'll be doing that this time.  I've read the instructions for removing the rotors and they include removing the hubs.  The instructions make it seam fairly straight forward but I know how things (springs) can just pop out of no where while removing things making their replacement difficult.  Hoping someone here can tell me what to look out for while removing the front hubs and is it as non complicated as the instructions (Chilton's Repair & Tune-up Guide 1970-83 Toy Trucks) make it out to be?

nothings  gonna  jump out at you  :aaa:

but  here we go,

10mm  socket  to remove the hub dial,   then you need  snapring pliers  or  a couple small screw drivers  to remove the  snap ring,   then  12mm socket  to remove the hub  nuts  but  just get them all loose  and  out to the end of the threads  then take a hammer  and SMACK  the hub  right next to each small stud  to pop the cone washers  out,  if  you try to squeeze them  they  will never budge

after you get them off  remove the nuts  and hub,  then your gonna need a 54mm socket  or some  slide  joint  pliers  to remove the  large  hub /spindle nuts,  theres a lock tab  that must be  pried away,  then  after the first nut  off it comes

OH  and  you'll need a 17mm   to  remove the 2  large bolts that hold the brake caliper  on the hub  befor you can pull the hub off

now  if  you  are going this far i HIGHLY recommend  just rebuilding the knuckles  Marlin has a  kit with  wheel bearings  and trunion/knuckle bearings  and all the seals  for you  wiper  ball,  (does it leak on the inside of the wheel??)

for $125 i think

does it leak on the inside of the wheel??

Yep, both sides.

Thanks Glen, for the advice and I'll look on Marlin's site for the kit.

Along the lines of replacing old worn parts like rebuilding the knuckles, are there any other seals or parts that I should replace once I'm in there?  Will the cone washers be reusable?
