common engine swaps for 84truck
« on: Apr 04, 2004, 12:03:17 PM »
I have a 84 truck that i used for a daily driver as well as off-roading. Now my question is what is the most common gm engine swap and how much am i looking at on the cost ? I will be using my toy as  a daily drive/4x4 for time being. any help would be great.

I have a 84 with a 350 and a th350 trans with a yota case.  There is another one in my driveway that I am putting a 2001 4.3 in very shortly.  Either way you go it takes the same mods to everything so you can figure they are about the same cost.  The only hangup is what you can get the engine for, and do you want fuel injection or not.  Any Q's you got Im sure i can take care of.

That would be a good choice.  If Im not mistaken that year had about 205 horse.  I think that the 4.3 is about the perfect match for toy drivtrains.  It has gobs of power but the drivtrain can survive it.  Unlike my 350, it costs too much on parts to get on the stupid pedal.

Im sure Marlin will cringe if he reads this but Ive ran the t-case without oil for awhile (front driveline fell off,  dont ask it was stupid) and the poor little thing never even flinched at that.  It is the ONLY thing I have never had any problems with!  I have broken countless r&p's drivlines and birfs, hell I blew my th350 in half it didnt even notice!  As for the rest of the drivetrain it all depends on your right foot and shift kit if you go auto.  I wuld have no quams telling you to go for it.

Yea,,Birfs and maybe an t-case output shaft..Other then that I think its all pretty good..If you stay with 4.10 gears It should hold up pretty good..The 4.3 is a far better swap I think over the v-8..Less weight and weight can be a major birf killer...
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

your birfs will puke at any throttle jockeying you decide to do.  Just be pretty easy on it in high traction situations and theyll survive a lot longer

I thought about doing that since I have acces to all that I would need but I like the options of the yotas so I have stuck with it.  That and the 205 swap wjould happen when I blow this case up, I think itll be awhile!
