Does any one know what engine swaps are possible for a 87 4 runner in califonia, that will still alow it to be smog leagal. i have no idea the reqirements of smog if a differnt motor is used. if anyone has done motor swaps for more power if you could tell me what motor and what you had to do inorder to keep it streat and smog legal, thanks

BigMike did a 3rz-fe swap into his 1st gen toyota. He also got it smog legal too. Check out his buildup...

You can go through life being scared of the possible, or you can have a little fun and tease the inevitable.

Give a man venison, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to hunt Blacktail, he'll be frustrated for life!

You are generally safe with any mods equal to, or newer than the body year.

Mine 80 frame, 85xcab body, 92 4.3V6 = passes Cal Smog
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

thanks, so i pretty sure i get it, just any toyota vehicle newer than mine with all the smog stuff will fly. does it have to be toyota, or is it mainly the smog stuff that makes the differnce. i think i saw a california toyota truck with a ford 5.0, is that really legal or possible? thanks

Anything 87 or newer, as long as you use everything smog related, ie; 87 5.0 mustang engine and all smog related items,     Nate

Brandon here on the board had a 82 or 83 I think toyota with a Ford 5.0 EFI In it that he used as his DD. So yes, it is possible. He was or maybe still is selling the motor tranny and adapters I think. IF you look in Rigs For Sale look for 5.0ta and you will see the stuff for sale if you wanna check it out.

Do it, that'd be an excellent swap.  It might be a tight fit, but it will work.  Check through some of the old posts, there have been a lot on the subject,     Nate
