Engine Swaps
« on: May 29, 2002, 05:11:35 PM »
I was thinking of doing an engine swap in my 83 PU.  I was thinking a buick v6(3.8 i think it is) or a 4.3 chevy v6.  What do you think? I basically need to know what kind of adaptors and things i need for a dual t-case setup with the swap. The cheapest yet reliable way possible.  Would it be better to just do a 20r head on a 22r block? Please help. :ugh: ???

that is a wide open question..

what do you want? For any swap you will need to make/buy motor mounts, adapters, etc..

narrow it down and I can help ;)

I run a ford mustang HO 5.0 V8, NWOR motor mounts, NP435 tranny with AA adapter to 23 spline toy tcase couple with marlins adapter to another tcase

Brandon is right, this is a very broad question.

Possibly the most common swap would be the 3.4L Chevy V6.

But I've seen Supra Engines (7M-GTE), Chevy 350s, Mustang 5.0 L (Brandon), big blocks, small blocks, 3.0 L Toyota, 3.4 L Toyota, even a 388 stroker.
I mean hell, at our shop we have a 4.3L in a 81 and a LT1 Camaro 350 Tuned Port in an 85 4Runner.

Many swaps are possible however Toyota trucks are not known for having alot of room to play with for swappen in larger hamster wheels. 79-83 Trucks are of the least amount of space. Another concern would be drive train in which case many companies are now offering adapters to go from GM, Ford, and Dodge transmissions back to the stock Toyota transfercases.

In terms of hop'n up your 22R, this is the cheaper alternative (to an extent) but will yield considerably less in the end.
If you do alot of trick work to a carb'd 22R, put on a 20R head, shave and deck, run larger valves, cams, headers, webbers etc. you may be able to push past 150 or even 160 HP, but it will take alot of work and proper tuning to get that result.

Also, it largely will depend on why you want more power. Is it for towing? Speeding? Crawling? Mud Bogging? Maybe Racing :ack: Consider weight too. If you like to run in the snow, I have seen V8 autos do horrible in the snow because they have become a heavy sled and the 4cyls can stay on top of the snow and get much farther with less power. sometimes i guess....

Let us know what your plans and goals are,
Regards,
BigMike

Well :snare:....I am movi
ng to Socorro New Mexico, and i plan to do lots of wheelin, mostly crawlin', some muddin' and not much towing or anything.  I will probably do some snow runs every now and then.  I think that if i could find a cheap 350, that would be great.  I am actually trying to find one for an 83 firebird right now, so.....but i don't want too heavy.  I will probably run anywhere from 36-38 inch tires.  I have a flatbed, that i will probably modify.  It's really heavy.  About as heavy as the front of the truck.  Are there any instructions on this kind of thing that i could get (cheaply of course :change:).   ???

Instructions? I guess that depends if someone took the time to write a crap load of info up somewhere.

Here is an important question : are you rather mechanically skilled?

And : what kind of tools / machinery / storage / parts do you have access to.

An engine swap is "no here is a guide and here are some part numbers" its more like a "here's an engine, now stuff it in there and make it work" type thing.
Support will be basically simply help and suggestions from those who have done similar swaps.

I have swapped in a 93' Engine in my 87' MR2 and wiring is far from fun.  :ack:

Consider staying with  Toyota.
Take a look at this site:

Okay, I hate to spoil someone elses party but I'm in a similar situation. (I'll try to be more specific) I hope this answers questions for both of us.

I've got an '83 Mini with an '87 22RE. I Have Marlins ultimate Dual setup 223:1. The truck crawls great but here in Tennessee, you have to get up and go sometimes. The 22's power band is way to small. I don't need lots of horses but need to be able to wind up and gain momentum better than I can now. The rear is a Ford 9" so it's plenty strong. I like the idea of the 7MGE swap but I need a stronger Tranny anyway. So...
(am I including everything?)
I own a Chevy V8 that came out of my old FJ45 that needs a rebuild. unidentified 283 or 327.

I'm a former Cruiser guy and an learning about the Mini options.

Thanks in advance.

I've seen that 4-runner at Marlin's and a small block is a lot of stuff to pack in a little truck. I would reconmend a v6 swap. I know someone with a buick v6 and someone with a Vortec v6. both are awsome on torque and power. Stock drive train can handle them. I really want to install a toyota 3.0 v6 in my 84' 4-runner but had to settle for a 92' 22RE. If you don't need to worry about smog laws, the Buick v6 would be cheaper(I just happen to have the AA bell housing). My 4500 pound FJ40 (900 pound 2F engine) never had problem in snow(air down those tires/ 2# p.s.i) and the extra weight up front will help keep the front end on the rocks during a step climb. Its like this, A vortec v6 is about 200 h.p and a toyota 3.0 is like 150h.p, if you have proper gearing that should be enough to crawl or haul. Auto/stick is a personal choice and they make adapters for GM and Ford trans and they even make motor mounts. There is still a lot of custom fitting and wiring. Its not a weekend job and it will take some $ to do it right!

Stay away from  the Toyota 3.0 gutless wonder.  Ask anyone who has one or had one, and they will tell you that it's a dog.  Gearing is good, but for highway and hauling, it's not werth the swap. Check the website I left above, thats the choice if you stay with Toyota. I hear about the 7M swap, has any body talked to someone who did it? How did it work out? I'd like to know. Not sure that one is worth it eather.

I've seen the Supra swap and the driver likes it. Had a couple of them show up at GSMTR this year. The only two that I have much info on is the article on the web and Paul Elbisser's truck and both had to replace the head gasket shortly after install.

My truck's an '83 and they're two inches shorter in the engine compartment... Two very important inches.

7M-GTE 2954cc/3.0L 232 hp @ 5600 rpm, 254 tq @ 3200 rpm, 8.4:1 compression at 5psi/0.35bar (US and European models).

232 Horsies and 254 Torquies sounds damn sweet to me!!!!!!!! BTW, that's more torque than HP stock. 8) So fits in well with 4x4 eh?

How about this Japanese Evolution Version that uses a larger turbo, stock from the factory mind you:
7M-GTE 2954/3.0L 265 hp @ 5600 rpm, 264 tq @ 4400 rpm  -- bone stock! :o :o :o

I'm at the tail end of a 4.3L swap.  It's a real nice fit too.
It's not cheap!  Expect to pay about twice as much as you think it will cost :~~:

looks good! Fired it yet? They do fit much better than a v8 - and power isn't that much difference (mine is 225hp)

Just playin with the go V8 thing, pretty much comes down to what you can get. I don't regret my V8 but if I had a V6 at the time it would have went in instead

I'm thinking about a 4.3 swap, but that 7m-GTE or whatever seems good,....if it will fit in my 83....i doubt it :ack:

Brandon, how do you like that rollbar roof?  I thought about doing that and making a custom soft top, but i wasn't sure. ???

Has anyone ever seen a 7M-GTE swap?

When you view it in its natural habitat (in a Supra), it looks very long and must be difficult to fit into a p/u.

Anyone have any pics of a 7M-GTE in a Toyota 4x4?
