I ran 4-4.5 miles today in 37:05 :woohoo: I'll get the actual distance later tonight.

Knocked off three minutes from the same run last week.  Not all me though, I didn't have to stand at the lights as long this time :gap:

I've gone on one hike :shake: but have been way more active at work and have been eating less.  I also jog up the ever growing stairs going from the dock to land atleast a few times a day.  Results:  I look and weigh the same :maddest:  I'd probably lose weight if I started drinking sodas again :haha:

I WILL get out and hike more, especially since I just fixed my alternator on the truck.  My friend even said he would take off a couple days so we can go on a legit hike and even get in some wilderness fishing :woohoo:

Who is this, and what did you do with Nate?

I'll vouch.  I am by far the giant of our family at...get this...FIVE FREAKING SEVEN.

Aaaaand about 175 doughy, pudgy pounds.  I've found that I just don't have the motivation to change my comfortably sedentary lifestyle.  A few years ago, though, my wife and I took a weight training class at the local JC...far cheaper than a gym membership, and no year-long commitment.  I did not alter my diet at all and never made what I would consider a concerted effort, but I actually LOST about ten pounds after lifting weights for six weeks, along with a (very) moderate cardio effort.  Not what I expected to see.  Come to think of it, I may have been eating more, as even thinking of picking up a heavy object gives me a voracious appetite.

I have plenty of dumbbells.  I think I'll try to work just a little bit while watching TV after dinner.  Couldn't hurt, unless I injure myself.  Which, naturally, would hurt like a mother.  Got a small weight bench, too, but no room to set it up - and realistically, it would go unused anyway.

motorider228

Well I pretty much quit running as my job kicks my ass every night. I haven't lost weight as I really can't lose much but I have gotten alot stronger being that I am lifting 4-6 hours a night 5 days a week.  My job is hard, tedious, boring and very freakin hot right now but I get a great work out so it is nice I suppose, I like th ephysical activity.

weirdtimes_7

I'm not good either.... When i came back from the desert, i came back at 165 pounds and was really fit. I was running and working out every day... made me lose 30 pounds in 6 months. But now that i have been home i have balooned up again to 195.... i hate having a belly, although my wife says she like's it.... I DON'T.....

It's time for me to hit the weights again and start shedding the pounds.... oh ya, did i mention i am 5'7''.... kinda hate being so damn short....

Along with being fit, i have to lose the weight cause of my family history.... not good, not good at all...

So I did a little more about this today.  Decided to go on another hike in the alps and hit another lake I've either never been to or haven't seen in a while.

I set off with my camera in my pack and the thought that I should have it more accessable.  On the way past the sign at the trailhead I see a handwritten note about bear sightings.  There'd been 6 since may 25th at various points across the trail, one said "BIG BEAR at the half way point".  It bit me in the ass.  I kept hearing rustling at all points on the trail and ignored most knowing it was either birds or squirrels/golden mantles, but at one point something changed.

I was at about the mid point on the trail and heard the exact same kind of noises, but for some reason I thought "I wonder if that's a bear", looked up the hill and there's one rooting around in the leaves about 60 feet away.  I only watched him for a few seconds before........:pokinit:!  My camera's in my pack........dig it out as quietly as possible and........gone.  I heard him up until right before getting it out but he was gone.  I walked half way up the hill to get a better look at the clearing and saw nor heard any sign of him.  It stayed clipped to my chest strap and I never saw him or another again

Anyway, on to the trail.  My book and map listed the trail as 6 miles and difficult.  They weren't kidding!  Both put hike time at 3hrs 15-30 minutes.  Again, I don't like stopping.  I find it's better if I just work through a hike only stopping to shake the rocks out of my shoes or snap a pic, then off again.  I always try and keep a brisk and steady pace, which was hard because they accurately described the trail!  Of the 6 miles ATLEAST 5.5 were uphill :ack:  There were some tough rocky spots, but what made for the difficulty was the general steepness of the trail.  A lot of it was fairly easy uphill, it's just the steep sections that were absolutely kicking my ass!  I haven't sweat like that in a while and hope not to for a good while too.  I was definately expelling more fluid than I was taking in, but overall I drank about 100 ounces of fluid over 12 miles and only peed twice.

I like my new day pack but my shoulders are definately sore!  It wore better than my camelback and has more space but mal-adjustment early on took it's toll on my shoulders.  Lesson learned, adjusted it much better after a while and it felt worlds better!

Overall a good 12 miles and I got another alps lake/trail under my belt, though I did get skunked on the fish!  Another couple weeks and my friend and I are going to try for a 2 dayer and another lake/trail I've never done, just gotta get out the map and do some figuring.......

Soooooooooooooooo......... how's everybody doing on this?  I went hiking once a week for 3 weeks, took a week off to go pigeon hunting, which really involved a few miles of hiking anyway, and plan on going again tuesday.  I did a couple/few miles yesterday also.  I'm going to try going out for grouse this tuesday :crossed: , which will take me on another 6-8 miles.

The result of all this?  I'm in pretty much the same shape as I was before :haha:  There's just too much slack time between the hikes to do any real good, other than beating my knees and hips into submission.

I almost hate to post here.

A little background first:

My grandfather was a farmer from Iowa. When he passed away, he was over 300 pounds. ~6'

My father who is now 69 has been losing weight (Dr.'s orders) and is down to i think 260. was over 300. also ~6'

My brother 6 yrs older has developed the dunlap disease (stomach dun lapped over the belt). don't know exact weight >190. also ~6'

kneedownnate, I look like the clone that regurgitated me.

Me, on the other hand, I look like an earthworm with the crap slung out of it. I never passed 100 pounds till after i graduated hs, had a late growth spurt and stopped at 5'10. after i got my first job, i had reached 120. since then, the heaviest i have been is 155 (from working next to a fast food joint). but, for the last ~15 yrs, have stayed right around 140 - 145, without consciously trying to gain, lose or maintain. I eat only when I am hungry, drink A LOT of soda, work in the construction industry, pretty much veg out when i get home, and of course the wife would be upset if I didn't eat dinner after she slaved over that hot stove...   I have made it clear to my family that i am going to stay like i am.

My main problem is that it is hard for me to find a pair of pants that fit because my waist is SMALLER than my inseam.

But, I will offer my encouragement to all of you who have problems in this area. Keep giving the effort. It will all be worth it.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Soooooooooooooooo......... how's everybody doing on this?

Well, since you asked, I actually managed to shed about 15 pounds.  I was 175, but knocked that down to 160 mainly by stepping away from the feed trough and eating healthier, plus a few (VERY few, lately) walks around the neighborhood in the evenings.  Surprising how filling a huge salad can be (if you load it full of chicken), and I'm not one for breads and starches anyway, so it's relatively easy to cut them out.  The hard part is staying away from beer, ice cream, etc.

Actually, after a week of slacking off, I'm back up to 163.  Better get back on the wagon!

I would have to say walking the rocks of the Rubicon and mountainous trails of AR is a sure way to loose some weight!
I probably lost at least 10lbs and I am not going to backslide like I did last year.
I'm going to get back to walking up our 6 story parking garage and will loose another 20 lbs come hell or high water

I quit smoking this summer and therefore started drinking soda.  So while my overall health is better (no chest pains while breathing) I think I have gained some pounds.

freds40

I have now gone 3 full days without a soda. That says a lot for me. I used to drink a couple @ lunch, couple @ dinner. I don't drink coffee so sometimes I would drink 1 in the morning. I don't drink alcohol, never have, but my wife always told friends that I drink Pepsi like an alky would beer.  :ha_ha:
I tried switching to diet for a bit and it slowed my consumption but I figured the best benefit would be if I stop all together. The first day I had a pretty bad head ache. Had a slight one the second day but yesterday was just fine.
Then we decided to go wake boarding yesterday with some friends. I haven't hit the lake in 3 or 4 years. I did fine once I remembered how to get up  :smack: but man am I sore today.  :boxing: I guess that means it's working.

If you can't cut out the beer(like me) cut down on the amount of bread you eat.  Think of beer as bread in a bottle.  I quit eating fast food, cut back on regular bread, kept drinking (probably more than most of you, and well leave it at that), I have quit soda all but maybe 2-3 a month.  I eat 3 eggs for breakfast, lunchmeat on wheat with light mayo and mustard for lunch, and typically a chicken titty for dinner, with beers for dessert.  Not adding any exercise, I have dropped probably 10-15 pounds WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING ELSE.  Gonna get back on the bike next week(I hope) to get in some cardio.

Alright Duffil you are my hero!  :beerchug:

About 10 or 11 months ago I had to get surgery for an inguinal hernia. Aside from the 3 months I had to wait to get surgery without being able to strain myself, it has taken almost a year to get back to my former self. Even 7 months after the surgery if I strained myself too hard I would get horrible sharp pain in my stomach. So I basicaly just took it easy, drank a lot of beer and didnt pay much attention to my weight. Now I am fully healed but the effect of doing nothing for a year in terms of extreme physical activity has taken its toll. I weighed myself a week ago and I am 215 lbs. For 6' 3" tall that isnt bad but the little beer belly has got to go.

So far I have cut soda, energy drinks, fast food, and excess crappy junk food about a month ago. now I am working on getting over the hump of not exercising (besides sex :D) for the last year. I am going to tune up my old hard tail Trek mountain bike and start taking my dog with me on some trail rides cuz there are lots of great trails within a few miles of my house. Also I renewed my membership to the gym but i have only gone once or twice since then so today after reading this thread I have been inspired to go to the gym today and get back in the routine.

Like duffil mentioned diet really is key, you can lose a lot of weight just by changing what you eat and drink. I just dont want to give up my beer thats all so I gotta find other ways to make it work :)
