I've done...... nothing!  In my defense, I did start taking glucosamine recently in hopes that my hip and knees will be a little more usable :crossed:  Gas prices are going to put a damper on my hiking too now :ack:

OK GUYS, Check this out!

I know you've seen this image I sometimes use in my signature:

Well here is a great idea that I am going to do this winter: Convert my Mountain bike into a Hybrid!

Check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/v/3eNdU9QQZUk&rel=1

Ok, before you make any comments, here is how I think about this...

I live 6.7 miles from work. Now I can ride this using 100% leg power in 20-25 minuets including stopping for traffic lights. I will average somewhere around 17-20 mph depending on wind....

Ok, that is great. But what if I didn't sleep well? Or what if I woke up late? Or just felt sluggish in the morning? I will immediately take my truck to work instead of the bike. And soon, before I know it, I will be back in the truck and not on the bike.

Some of you might be thinking that using an electric assist power on the bike is cheating and its not fair, yadda yadda yadda, but I figure that without it, I am very much more likely to not even ride my bike and just take my truck, which defeats the whole purpose: I am no longer exercising and no longer saving money by avoiding gas fillups!

And here is the good thing: That guy in the video says he can get up to 35 mph. Well, I wonder what he cruises at... because on a good day I can cruise at 20 mph right now, so maybe I could average 30 mph with the Hybrid---- dang! Now it will only take me 12-14 minuets to get to work --- and --- ding ding, this is FASTER than it takes me to drive to work! Imagine riding 30 mph down the street on a regular day on your bicycle, everyone would think you're Lance Armstrong :o

So I figure that I can get to and from work faster, get exercise EVERYDAY (something I have not done since the 7th grade ), and not have any gas bills! Not to mention the wear-and-tear or my MTRs, my engine, my suspension, etc. (since I drive my Crawl rig to work).

:beerchug:

The only downside is that since its Winter time, of course you would be more likely to drive an enclosed vehicle than to ride your Hybrid bicycle to work... but if the weather is not an issue, then yeah, I think this is awesome and I am going to get one next month  Its only ~$200 for the motor anyways!

TTT!  How's everybody doing?  I'm still sitting right at my heaviest and blubberiest.  Hiking every 2 weeks or so isn't doing much good since I'm not regularly exercising between hikes, save for walking up and down the docks a lot at work.

I'm going to be getting a resistence roller exerciser thingy so I can pedal the bicycle while watching tv and not have to worry about the high heat or super cold.  I'm hoping I can force myself to use it at least every other day, allowing a little break for my knees between sessions.  My knees are still continuing to be a big problem for me and my hips are quickly catching up.  I am taking glucosomine/chondroitin/msm again and hope it starts to help pretty soon.  Luckily I found them for a lot cheaper from the same company whose vitamins I've used since the early 90s, so there won't be the huge hit every couple months I need more!

So post up, I know jason is staying active because he has to, but how's everybody else doing?

I had honestly been thinking about bumping this one up for a while now to see how people were doing.

I myself am not blubbery but was terribly out of shape.  I was getting chest pains going up stairs at work.  I quit smoking 3 months ago and have started some regular exercising.  I wanted to join a gym but I am way too ADD to sit and do reps.  BORING...  And then with the price of gas I needed some other media to play on rocks.  and then inspiration came to me in the form of a co-worker into Rock climbing.  I went with him once, and got hooked!!   I was thinking about starting a "what are your other hobbies" thread but it included exercise.

I needed outdoors, I needed Rocks, I needed something physical and it fit the bill for me.  A lot of times, I just have to step away from the computer and sweat.

I began P90X but my knee keeps killing me in the Ploymetrics workout. It's a downhill spiral: The more I exercise, the worse my knee gets, so I stop exercising for my knee to recover and I end up gaining weight which in turn puts more load on my knee such that is gets injured even quicker with less and less exercise. I am so sick of this, I wish I could afford health insurance :(

So what I've been doing is riding my bicycle to work and it's great, but because of the 2000-something fires in California right now, I don't want to be out side huff'n and puff'n all that smokey air.

I am going to wake up this Sat. morning like at 5am and ride up to the lake and back before Church. It will be cool, less traffic, less sun burning, and I'll be doing something other than acting like a log in the bed! hahaha

I hate it when your trying to work on something and it hurts something else.  Can you favor the other leg or keep the part of the workout that is hurting your leg to a minimum while still maintaining a workout with that system?

I guess I've just become used to it since I work outside.  There's no escaping the smoke here!  It actually hasn't really been a factor in choosing to go outside, but I've used it as an excuse when I slept in one morning before a hike  :gap:

How is that workout BigMike?  I've looked into it, but thats as far as I've gotten.

P90X is pretty intense. Infact, It's killed me twice.

I started it in early Jan. It was like a new-years resolution. I am someone who really pushes the limit when it comes to exercising. The guy was like, "beginners should pace themselves" but I found that I could do the same things they were doing. So I was just going all out, and by the 4th day I was so sore I couldn't even reach my back in the shower (my chest and shoulders were on fire). So I took a break, and it took 4 days for the soreness to go away and I ended up getting sick! I got a cold that same week.

So it took me a while to get back into it, and in April I started it again. I just thought I had caught some fluke cold going around in the winter, so in April I figured I could push it again. Yeah right. I got sick again, started coughing like crazy and had a sore throat for a couple of weeks.

So then in June, I finally decided to start it over and totally back waaaaaaay off and lift weights that felt really really light and easy. It worked great! I got through the first week, and the second (it is a 3-month program, each month is a different workout).

And then on the 3rd week I was feeling really, really great and I thought I should step it up a notch, and while doing the Plyometrics workout, which is legs and lower back, my F*#$&$# left knee starting giving me hell and it swelled up so much I couldn't even bend it. I was so upset; this is so aggravating.

Someday I'll get the knee fixed. I had orthoscopic surgery on it when I was 15, and the doc left some scar tissue or some left over fragments of something, because whenever I am running down court in BB or whatever, I will be sprinting, and then a soft tissue, feels like a soft marble, will pop out and it hurts like hell if I bend the leg. So I'll have to stop in mid stride and massage my knee and I can feel that piece and push it around the knee cap until it finds some place to fall into. Once it's out of the way, I can continue for like 15 mins and then it will pop back out and I can't bend the knee without sharp pain.

I have wanted to so many time to just heat up a knife and cut my skin open. I can isolate the piece right at the surface and can feel it just sitting beneath the skin. That 1 piece of something is the only problem. The bone and muscles and tendons feel great, but it's just that small piece that pops out from time to time that prevents me from being active. :(

Ummmm, isn't that basically legal crank?

Edit:  just did a quick search and it says the sale of diet supplements/pills containing ephedra is illegal in the US.

Interesting.  Any bets on how long it's on the market again before people start popping them in doses that kill them, getting it pulled off the market again?

I went to hang out with a couple friends at a house one of them was house-sitting for a friend.  I went swimming in their pool for a while and remembered how much of a workout it is swimming or just moving around in the water!  I need to find a house with a pool and I bet I could get in better shape.  The irony is I work at a lake, but you can't swim where I work and I don't know that any sane person would want to  :ack:

Legally you're not supposed to swim within 200 feet of a dock or ramp, and technically you're not supposed to swim within our harbor.  I do swim in the harbor when I need to go under a boat to fix or check something, did it just a couple days ago to see if a fuel line was pinched.  The water is kinda gross and a lot of stuff gets spilled within the harbor during the day, not to mention the crotch rot that was rampant a couple years ago!  There was something in the water and nobody could figure out what it was, but it gave people rashes in their arm pits, elbows, crotch, pretty much any place where it could sit and fester.  Still wanna swim in shasta?  :gap:

That aside, I'd be a fool to swim around there with all the idiots in boats  :shake:

Good question.  I'd swim outside the harbor and do when I take out a houseboat.  Infact, I had to go in the lake several times the year of crotch rot and never got it despite having sensetive skin, and took a houseboat out and swam every day without issues
