Help, extremely engine shake at idle
« on: Feb 08, 2007, 10:31:49 PM »
So I've had problems getting this thing to run right. It's an 82 Toy with a 22R. Some of you have given me ideas to help me, but nothings helped. So I got a free carb from a dude here who races 2wd toyotas and it runs better. But it only likes to idle smoothly at 1200 RPMs. I can now idle it down to 800 but the engine shakes extrmely bad. I tried messing with the timing and that didn't help. So now my only idea left is a really badly blown head gasket. What do you all think?

Have you done a compression check? Are all the cyls the same?

Check the firing order of the plug wires and make sure the rotor lines up with a pin in the cap with a piston at the top.

Any smoke? and do your eyes burn? (exess fuel)

Make sure your plugs are not fuel fouled this will cause misfires.

Good luck

It's not running rich, and I don't have a compression gauge so I can't check cylinder compression. The plugs are fuel fouled because the last carb ran extremely rich, and I only adjust it with the idle speed screw. Plus the wires are all in the right order. Any more Suggestions?  How bout Head gasket, my uncle suggests that my valves may be messed up.

When did it start idling like that? Were you wheeling, hit any hard bumps that popped the front end up? I hit a driveway hard one time & ripped the motor mount.

change the plugs, go buy a compression tester, they are cheap -- especially to rule that out as a problem

x2

Fouled plugs will cause a misfire and rough idle. You said the old carb was running rich that would foul the plugs.

Chance them with new plugs, don't just clean them.

Also the compression test will tell you a lot. If you have two cyls side by side with low compression I would say head gasket. Also look at your coolant to see if it looks oily and check your oil to see if it is over full or has water in it. If the oil cap looks like a milkshake it could be a head gasket.

The valves don't just all of a sudden go out of adjustment although they may still need to be adjusted it should not be of as much a concern here.

Well the truck has ran like this since I got it running. I've oly driven it thriugh the alley's to and from school a few times only using 1st and 2nd gear. The plugs and oil was replaced a few months back and the truck has really only sat and idled. No hugh speed driving yet. I guess I should muter up a few bucks for a compression gauge. Thanks for the ideas.

Check for vacuum leaks, that would cause your problems.
