grinding noise when coasting...5spd..Marlin?
« on: Feb 25, 2004, 04:54:22 PM »
When I coast to slow down, there's a gear grinding noise in the transmission.  I check the oil and it's full.  It also make noise in 5th gear but not as loud.. If I slow down while in gear, the noise got a lot quieter.
Help!

Can I come have Marlin fix it? I'm 3 hrs away. I can take a few days off.

drain the tranny and see if there is any metal shavings in it, it could be a bearing inside the tranny, i dont know about the throwout bearing, it should have a magnetic drain plug so if theres alot of metal shavings stuck to it, then u prolly messed up the innerds of the tranny, i dont know alot about trannys im just saying some things that i noticed and did when i blew up my tranny although it sounds like urs isnt as bad as mine, i hope that helps

k..I ran through the gear with t-case in nutral and there's no noise.
Does this mean it's in the t-case ?..I'll take out the d-shaft next.

drain the oil in tranny and t-case, when i blew up my tranny i didnt notice a problem with the t-case in nutral, but train the oil and check for metal shaving or in my case a ball bearing fell out. the d-shaft wouldent do that it would make a vibration, and it would be when u exelerate or deserate, i still think its the tranny or rearend, if tranny and tcase oil are good then drain the rear dif oil and check it for metal shavings

Talked to Marlin today....He said I just need to replace my rear d-shaft with a front pre 86 d-shaft with cv joint and flange from the similar yr........maybe I'll just grab the whole t-case....:D

Thanks Marlin! You're the Man!
