1/4 Ellip 4-Link off the J-Stands!
« on: Jan 14, 2007, 09:48:29 PM »
This is the third time i've attacked the rear for articulation.  Not playin around this time.  This will be a Hinged 1/4 Ellip 4 Link.  The springs will be hinged at the frame with bushings and attched at the axle with a schackle type heim joint.  Just waitin on Alcan to get me my springs so I can start shootin my lengths and angles and start findin where my tabs will mount.  Also a bonus pic of my fence that get mowed down this morning by some punk in a camaro, don't worry, the Kid left a note on my door and I found him.  Also I'm good friends with Boggerrunner and Toy Tank, those are my main wheelin buds.  Later guys

Heres a really really old blurry pic of the original toyota, don't know how the quality will turn out...it was stock, other than 33x14.50 boggers and a crazy paint

Driveshafts are made out of John Deers PTO drive shafts, cut and welded to toyota flanges!  Theyre a lil sloppy but when torque hits em they don't bind and theyre strong as hell...never an issue...they do vibrate the dash out of the truck lol

It was in alaska at the time so the paint scheme fit well...and the boggers were a casualty from a 16 year old girl rear endin the truck and goin underneath the bed.

Heres some more random pics of the truck in action and build up...if anyone wants specs on the tank frame just let me know...it was super easy...the only reason it got expensive was cuz I went with diamond plate to skin it and anything with carbon nowadays is hella expensive.

I prefer to weld in short sleeve shirts. I love it when you get burned so bad that your skin is that cherry red with white girl thingy looking crystalization everywhere. It only happens once unless your are a dumbass like me then it happens twice. But no more than that.

Well here are the quarter ellips from Alcan spring, got em mounted tonight, I used Grade 8 Bungees...only a fool would use anything less.  Also picked up my Warn 9.5 TI and cut some more out of the front grille.  Still gotta wire it ina nd mount it.  As for the springs, I'm thinking of all kinds of lil ideas.  Luckily I work with the Ex-Owner of AOR4x4 and an engineer for Portal-Tek.  Things are getting confusing!

Before that, gotta get cutting...Gotta cut out and grind the steel spring perches on the axle...leaving the truss for my upper links.  I gotta make space for the heim shackle coming off the snail wrap. So Gotta grind and then weld in new perches for the spring to connect to the axle.  The stock spring mount on the frame is a no go.  Gonna cut that off and build a new one out of 3/8 steel and french it into the frame.  Then I gotta sleeve the end of the springs and and run a bushing through all of that.  So it's gonna be hinged at the frame.  Then a heavy steel bumpstop will come off the frame near the upper spring mount and bump against the spring.  When the truck sits at static it will always ride on the bumpstops, the shackles will allow for generous up-ward movement.  Since it will be hinged at both ends nothing will limit it's downward movement except limiting straps.  And of course I have to factor in the 4 link and try to make the axle swing in a circular movement through the up and down stroke.  Whew, lotta :pokinit: to do.

Here's an update.  Some pics of what I'm gonna have to cut and grind off.  Everything with an "X" will be gone.  This is to make room for the heim joint shackle to move.  And I threw in a pic of the truck after the second try at flex.  It did better than the first attempt but not as good as I wanted.  I was expecting too much from 1/2 elliptical springs with alot of arch.  Now it's going all the way with a no expense spared 4-link and 1/4 elliptical springs.  One of the reasons I didn't go coil overs is because I got alot of money sittin in the Bilstein 7100 Remote Reservoir 14 inch full body shocks.  Time for a beer!

Yeah the winch lined right up, just had to cut some more bumper and grille...this warn with internal solenoids is a lil taller than the milemarker.  But most winches from 8000-12,000 pounds use a 4.5x10 inch bolt pattern. But no it aint bolted up yet.  Winch is on the back burner since the truck can't move.
