Chevy Spring questions..
« on: Dec 26, 2006, 11:39:10 AM »
Currently im running chevy springs with dual shackles and lift blocks( 1986 4runner).  It flexes great, but my ride quality is pretty poor, im wondering if this setup is causing highway vibrations or not?  and if switching to long shackles and dumping the lift blocks will improve ride quality or how will it affect my rig?
thanks,
Andy

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

so are you getting vibrations at highway speeds now? if so it could be bad bushings. i run 63" chevys with a standard shackle and a lift block and mine rides like a caddy. personally i'm not a fan of the double shackle, yes it flexes good but their many bad characteristics too. single shackle and the 63s, if set up right will flex just fine.

How's your driveline angle.  I ran that same setup for a while with no vibrations.

i have that as well but my chevy shackle is the other way and thats how ive seen all the others as well. i dont know if that would be causing vibrations. like 81rokyoat said id go with long single shackles. if you set them up right you can get great travel out of those springs still. check out my thread in the rig gallery and see what happened to my spring pack because i had a double shackle. i destroyed my pack.

the 63  are a thick leaf design,  which yea  they  flex  good  but ride rough,    to get good flex  and a nice ride you need about 6 thin leaves,   for the back of a 4runner  i would get  some 2wd F150  from say 88-about 93  year model,  and just bolt them up  with no block,

another thing  is  if that pic of the shackle is at normal ride height, the  shackle  is bottoming out   you need another inch  of shackle length

ive seen the carnage on your rig and that scares me a bit.... how much fabrication will it take to run single long shackles instead?

stock ford springs by themselves? or added to my chevy pack?

Just run a single shackle and move your shackle hanger back.

How much lift do you gain when you just use the chevy springs?

Just run a single shackle and move your shackle hanger back.

theres only room to move the hanger back about 2in at the most.. then the frame runs out...
