SAS frame question
« on: Dec 25, 2006, 09:47:14 AM »
I'm doing a sas on my 87 4Runner. When I cut the holes for the front shackle pins, I found that the metal is very thin between a retangle factory hole in the frame & where I cut. Is this a problem? Should I make a plate to reinforce that area or is it ok the way it is?

you should have cut lower,  but  do the other side the same,  and YES  reinforce the entire area with some 1/8  or 3/16  plate

OK, thanks. I used the template that came with the kit but the kit didn't come with instructions.

What I'm going to do is make a plate that comes 2" above the hole that way I can still get the welding tip up on top & make a "C" notch that will go part way around the shackle tube & weld it all togther. I'm using 1/8" plate which will be thick enough I think.

Sounds good. 1/8 inch should be all you need.

notching out the top plate for the sleeve would be about the best you could do.  it would probably be stronger than stock if you did that.

what do u mean exactly? wouldnt it be better to just plate the whole thing and start over drilling a new hole?

All I'm sayin is that I'd rather be safe than sorry. Itd suck to have a dicked up frame. I would weld 1/8 over the whole thing and redrill for sure.

This what I did. I used 1/8" plate x 5" long. I marked the plate in the center [2.5"] & used a hole 1 1/2" hole saw & drilled. The I cut the plate in half at the hole then made 2 plate. Fitted them above & welded.
