Okay here we go.... i finally bought a toyota after selling my ford.  Heres what i got, 1982 toyota 4x4, single cab, with new 32in meats and a clean paint job. 217,000miles.  Plus a bling bling stereo ! I have been reading hundreds of posts on toyota builds and have some big plans.  The thing is im a college student with just general mechanical and welding skills, so this build up is goin be slow.  If any ones in the Merced area and wants to lend a hand id defintly be willing to help with your project.  Actually id be willing to lend a hand to anyone in the area just to expand my knowledge. First thing to be done is to fix a tapping noise coming from the engine and then things will start rolling.
Heres the list to be done.
-lockers
-slight lift
-sliders and custom bumper
-flat bed
-dual cases
-cb radio
-interior cage
-plus a bunch more i cant think of right now

like i said im looking for help and ideas.  I have access to a shop with a lift and welder, plasma,  oxi-torch, air tools, and i think a bender somewhere, ect.  But i cant leave it there over night.  If anyones looking for an extra hand on their project id definitly be willing to help if i can fit it in between school and work.  Im looking to learn.
Thanks for your time and any input would be greatly appreciated!

ya its a ticking sound, metal on metal i think. I first thought that it was an exhuast leak but i cant find one anywhere so next i pulled the valve cover and checked the valves.  I found one that had a huge gap and fixed it.  Guess what, i started it up again and its still there.  gosh darn it!  Im stuck!  It follows the rpms of the engines and sounds like a valve but i fixed that and it still making it.  Any ideas???

pssh, i loved that thing, itd would go anywhere i pointed it and through anything i pointed it at, but it was a little much for college and the city so i had to downsize.  I have always loved toyotas but my first one didnt make it through a bad roll over so then we went to a couple a fords, a nissan and now finally a little yota again!

 :talkingn: You are joking right? If not you are gonna love your Toyota.

If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

if your "ticking" noise follows the rpms then its most likely a broken timing chain guide, thus causing your timinmg chain to slap against the timing chain cover. if you got the cash i would fix that right away before any damage ensues.

mado13

johnboy- someone else said that to so when i pulled the valve cover i checked those and they were fine.

mado13

my cameras not working!!!!!
ill try to find someone else to take them and get them up tomorrow.

mado13

i dont have pics right now so ill try and but the ride hieght into words so i can get a question out to yall.  The previous owner said that it wasnt lifted but i can run 32s underneath it and it clears okay.  When really flexing it stuffs the wheel wells.  I believe that there is a small lift because of this and i really would like to get a few more inches of lift.   I was thinking three inches of suspension and maybe a 1" body lift(is this possible, i just want to make some more room in the engine area).  Im looking for ideas?  I need something cheap, even something i could do on my own.
Thanks

rears springs up front and chevys in the rear...  couple inches of lift and cheap to do.  while your at it might as well throw a wider ifs rearend under it to... which i just so happen to have for you for not to much.... are you back in groveland for christmas or still in merced?  Need to go wheeling sometime soon... and ill turn a few wrenches with you...

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

Ill be back up around new years and we should definitly do some wheelin... i haven't wheeled that much around groveland more on the other side of the river up in tuolumne and twain harte. I gotta chase this noise down in my engine before i run her to hard but hopefully by then it'll be fixed.  Ya the rear ends gonna have to wait till i get some other stuff done but if its still around later ill look you up.  Did you ever sell your pickup?

79coyotefrg

he said cheap,  so that leaves out rears up front  unless you  already have hysteer,

1st gens  stock can fit 32's
i would go with the 1 inch body lift  and new body mounts

then  add a leaf to your packs  later  for some cheap lift

do i have to have hysteer to add the leaves?

86turboyota

not if it is just a lift and not a change in leave length.

thanks, i bought it off a young guy that bought it from the original owner.  He had big plans but it just sat in his driveway for two years.   The only complaint i have is that it wont pass smog but i have a couple more months.  Thanks again!

Hey man, I love the truck. Looks badass. Gotta love the 1st gens, especially a really clean one. More pics please!

:yikes: That is probably the cleanest 1st gen i have ever seen, it makes my restored one look like crap. Good starting point. With a bed in that good of shape i would bob it and mybe dovetail it but wouldn't get rid of it. :twocents:

I'll try to get pictures of my flatebed to you this weekend.  I just got my camera back.  However, that truck is awful nice to ditch the bed that is on it.  That is one sweet looking 1st generation.

mado13

hotttrod- i know but ive always wanted a flatbed on a rig and if your still selling put me on the top of your list.  You have a 83 right?  Id be interested in anything you aren't gonna use on your new build.  Send me the pics as soon as you get around to it!
