Oil pressure 81 22r
« on: Feb 05, 2004, 11:10:16 AM »
My 1981 22r has to much oil pressure.  The oil filter was blown off the engine on one occasion and the seal was blown on an oil filter on another occasion.  What can be done to fix this?  Also the alternator does not recharge the battery even though it is a new alternator.  Is it just bad wires or could something else be wrong?  Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

sounds like your oil pump has a clogged relief valve.  I f memory serves the relief valve is accesible on the top of the oil pump it has a 17 or 19 mm head take it apart and clean it.  On your alternator it sounds like its either a deffective part or you need to change the voltage regulator too.  Good luck

if it's a remanufactured alternator, it isn't uncommon for them not to work, even though they might be very shiny, I've had 3 bad ones-very annoying. Ditto on checking the relief valve-at least too much oil pressure is better than too little.

Ditto on the pressure relief valve, The socket is a 22mm.
Could have the wrong alternator. I have seen internal regulated alternators on trucks with the voltage regulator mounted on the drivers fender well. Your 81 4x4 truck should use a 4x4 only alternator that has the voltage regulator on the drivers fenderwell.

Is it a AutoZone alternator?  Some times they get in the wrong zone over there

Will I have to remove the oil pump to get the valve out?

No its on top of the oil pump you shouldnt have to pull anything off at all.  Its right on top on the pass. side of the pump.

From my experiences the best factory replacment alternators are from NAPA and CarQuest.  I'd stay away from Chiefs(err Auto Zone) Kragens, and Pep Girls.
