My 38 Weber is too much for the 22r (i think)
« on: Nov 08, 2006, 06:40:15 PM »
I saw the topic here a few days ago regarding this same subject.  I have had my 38 weber on my rebuilt 22r for about 5 tellico trips now and this last time got kind of annoying.  On a steep incline I had to flood the weber just to get it to fire. I don't remember this kind of flooding with my ol OEM carb.  I may be looking for something a little more sensible with gas also. This thing was eating more gas than a CJ (inline 6).  Has anyone went back to OEM toyota carb or just went to the 32/36 Weber?  Any input is great!

FYI---I am running hedman headers to a 2.25" exhaust with no cat and a dynomax..
bfg KM2's, 3" plain lift, detroit in front hp, twin sticking too.

Input:  I have a 32/36 and would NOT recommend it for anything other than a street truck.  You'll have the exact same problems.  I've had much better luck with the stock toy 22r carbs and plan to buy the lc engineering adapter if I don't end up using my holley 4bbl manifold.

What does the 32/36 do to on the gas mileage?

Depends on how you jet it.  I got 19mpg once when it was tuned to pass smog, but mostly 17 at that time.  Got 13-15 when it was tuned for better drivability and power.

I'd recommend making some adjustments to the 38 before you toss it for something else. I know guys run them with good results.

22R Aisan.........326CFM
32/36 Weber.....325 CFM
38 Weber.........390CFM

If it's tuned right, theres no reason why the 38 should be too much :twocents:

As for the argument that the stock 22R carbs runs more CFM than a 32/36 Weber, well as you can see, it's realistically (not technically) incorrect, but I think the Weber is way more sporty onroad vrs. the stock carbs dependability in off camber situations (offroad).

I think carbs unlimited should have off road parts for these by now. They told me a few years ago they were gonna get kits so they could handle steep inclines.

Doesn't it consist of plugging the float bowl vent and opening up a different vent so fuel doesn't spill over?  Maybe that's just doing it on the cheap though?

I just put a 38 in my truck the other day and so far I am very pleased with it.  I can't say how it does off-road since all the trails are under 5 feet of snow.  How do you have yours jetted/set?  It sounds like it might be running rich since your gas milage is bad.

With the extent of your mods, I think your engine will be very happy with the 38
