22-re troubles
« on: Oct 14, 2006, 08:48:57 PM »
My 88 pickup (22-re 5spd 4x4 with 157000 miles) is acting up and im not home to fix it..( away at college) so my dad is trying to get it to run properly again, and we cant figure out why it wont run.  It starts and runs for a few seconds and then dies.  No check engine light... it has gas... can hear the pump come on... tryed a different computer... but it just wont stay going.  The only thing i can think that it could be is the fuel filter is clogged maybe... but the thing is that it ran fine not too long ago.... plz give us some advice on what to do.
Thanks,
Andy

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

one other thought just came to mind... im not sure what it is called but there is a little valve looking thing that sits on top of the valve cover that i broke off.... and i dont have a picture of a 22-re to name what it is.... so that is also a possibility...

No, i broke mine off also and it still ran if. There is to of those one for a/c and one for 4wd so when you tern on the a/c or shift in to 4wd the engine will ideal up. Is there a vacuum line that came off or got cracked? I took both of the solenoid off and plugged the vacuum lines at the manifold.

Sounds like a problem with the airflow meter (AFM). This is exactly what it will do with the AFM unplugged. It will crank for just a few seconds then die. I would start there.
