which automatic trans do I have?
« on: Sep 12, 2006, 09:58:21 AM »
Just bought a 88 4 runner with a auto tranny....First auto I've had..Are they worth anything? The truck runs great and shifts good but I'm thinking about converting it to 5 speed.   Is there several different auto trannys and If so can you point me in the direction of figuring out what it is...I know It has 4.30 gear if that helps.

you have a A340F 4 speed automatic transmission with a VF2A chain drive transfer case. I had one in my 85 runner i swapped with a g58 and now i have a R151. Swap that thing out you will be very happy   :twocents:

if and when you swap it read this it might help answer any questions you have   http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=23833.0

put in some 5.29s and you will be happy, if your running a 31 inch tire or bigger. Autos are nice just put it in gear and go. Nice for rock crawling too. They are kinda of slugs on the road but do fine in 4lo even better when regeared.  I have also heard the auto trans are pretty strong can push big tires.
When in doubt, throttle out!!!

I am looking to swap in an automatic when I do the 22re motor in my '82
I haven't done the gears yet so I should go with 5.29's?
I will be runing daul cases.
How slugish will it be on the street?
I usually just drive it around town for fun, no real freeway miles.

I want to stay with 33s but it looks like 35s is a must for any real trails.
I would like to keep the body damage to as little to none as possible :crossed: :smack: :driving:

I thought gear slug and inch worm made adapterplates for that trans? Isn't that what they used on xtreme4x4 for the "wyo crawler" last season :flamer:

these autos are really reliable.  people don't know a lot about them, so they tend to bash on them.  it's the same auto as in a jeep.  i think the jeep autos are call an AW4 or something like that.  they come out of the same factory from all the research i've done.  i had one behind a v6 in my 90 runner.  it was awesome.  you can install duals behind it too.  both inchworm and gearslug have a conversion.  then regear the axles like mentioned, mine had trouble pushing the 35 mtr's i had on it with 4.56 axle gears if that helps.

in case you want more info there is an article on 4x4wire.com were Marlin did dual cases for a guy years ago, but the adaptor from inchworm is a much more simple swap now-a-days.

good luck!

Does MC offer the adapter? I can't seem to locate any info on there website.
I have a line on a 2wd w/ 22re and auto trans. that I plan to swap soon. I just like the thought of put it in gear and crawl away.

from what i gathered they were going to, but tooling and the like was too much $$$$.  what you want is an auto from a 4wd truck or 4runner, then use the inchworm adaptor to run dual cases.  that is the easiest and cheapest way to go right now.  the article i posted was from a few years back before any of the inchworm or gearslug invented their adaptors.

According to the boys at Wyo Tech. the 2wd and 4x are the same with one small internal change. Its been awhile since I watched the episode but have it on tape. I believe my doner is a '91 or ' 92, although I haven't actually seen it yet.
