Fixing my turning radius
« on: Sep 04, 2006, 06:44:25 AM »
I have a 90 extra cab v6 with a sas useing marlin hanger, 4" springs, high steer arms. But I used a sky 3/4 drop pitman arm and moved the box forward. The PO had 1.5" wheel spacers, and 10" wide wheels with a 4" back spacing.

I now know that the sky pitman arm isn't meant for marlins arms.(the length is slightly different) My front is locked and I'm running 35"s, so after a few hours of wheeling my steering gets really hot and doesnt work so well.

This winter I plan to cut and turn the knuckles. But for now I'm looking for a 8" wheel wonder what backspacing will help with my scrub radius. Or possibly getting rid of the wheel spacers. If some more money pops up I want to buy some sky arms to match my pitman arm.

I am confused, the sky pitman arm is not the same length hole center to hole center (along front to rear axis) as the stock arm?  It should be, otherwise that is stupid design.  Doesn't OTT or someone make pitman arms too?  I would change the pitman rather than change the steering arms.  Marlins are made to match the original stock geometry of the Toyota system, if sky messed with the dimensions then they are an oddball and you would be stuck running ONLY sk products in the future if you run their arms.

Nope, the sky pitman is the same length as stock, therefore works just the same as the pitman that comes with the Marlin kit.  How are your steering stops set?  You would be better off spending your money on a cooler for the steering fluid instead of buying new steering arms.  Have you tried pulling the spacers off and testing the backspacing without them to get a feel for what the differences are?

Question did the PO or you use anything other than power steering fluid, like trans fluid? Sounds like at some point someone didn't use power steering fluid and my have messed up the pump.

Aren't we supposed to be using ATF?

No, power steering fluid ONLY!! ATF will eat the seals. Toyota's are not as bad as Honda's, but eventually they'll go bad with ATF. ATF has detergents to keep the trans clean and a PS don't like it. ATF cleans so well next time you have grease on your hands compare it to a hand cleaner, you'll find ATF cleans better. Only problem is now you've got ATF all over your hands. ATF is an excellent way to clean sludge out of the inside of your engine, about 1000 miles before you change your oil throw a qt. in and soon it will be squeaky clean. Who needs Mystery Oil when you've got ATF.... notice how it is the same color?

Its a brand new pump from carquest. I used toyota atf, like the cap said to. Ill drain it and try power steering fluid. I replaced the pump a month ago and it didnt turn lock to lock. Now it does, I'm thinking with the back spacing, caster being off, locker and wheel spacers its just too much for the pump. I need wheels for other reasons. But I'll get a cooler when some more money comes around. Thanks.

I am thoroughly confused, the FSM says ATF...wasn't there a big thread on here within the last year all about why you need the ATF for its better heat handling properties over PS fluid...

What type of pump did you get?  New or reman?  That's one thing I've learned from everybody on this board is if you can get your stuff directly from Toyota!  Not schucks or napa, or carquest!

i thought we was supposed to use dexron only so it don't destroy the seals, is that right?

Can you return it?  Maybe you just got a bad pump?
