It is the ring gear in the front.

If you read the description for the video on youtube.com, it says the following:

QuoteMarlin shows up at the trailhead of John Bull in Big Bear, Ca with his CRAWLER truggy with a busted front ring gear and still wheeled the hardest trail in 2wd.

Marlin broke his front ring gear while positioning the Crawler Truck for a photo shoot before the event began. He was backing up a hill over some rocks and he got hung up on the front axle. The camera guy from 4X4 Builder really wanted the shot so Marlin tried getting the front axle over the rock three times, and on the third time, it went POW!!

That front end has been in there since around 2000 and when we were prototyping the rear disco, we did numerous front burn outs and drove the truck around town and on the freeway for a week off just the front end. I'm not sure how much that stressed the ring gear, but combined with the fact that Marlins rig typically weighs a good 5000 pounds (a whole ton more than mine) I know those axles have gone through hell and back. :yesnod:

Here is the picture of where Marlin had his rig positioned.

It is pathetic that I have to say this, but here is the disclaimer for this photo: This is on the shoulder of a road that is located on private land for a mining claim.

I have all of the Photos from the Big Bear run that I still need to upload :inthedark:

He did a pretty hard trail...John Bull like that. The video was of the first obstacle.

He is a very cool guy, and my buddy Mikey sure liked being able to spot him You can hear him in the background at the end of the video.

holy crap, triple cases,  imagine the crawl ratio if you had 3 transfter cases all with crawler gears, 5.71 gears and 35 inch tires

In that video he is more than likely to be in Dual Ultimate, which is 223:1. He still has another shifter that he could use to engage his 2nd 4.70:1 gear set, so 223:1 x 4.70:1 = 1,047:1 8)

Oh yee of little faith. Why do you think that truck is known World Wide as the "Crawler Truck"?

Here is the Famous Marlin Czajkowski "Wood Trick" that he started doing wwaay back in the mid 90s. If you watch carefully, as the tire goes up and over the piece of wood, the drivetrain is shifted to the coast-side of each gear as the engine compression is used to slow the truck back down the wood without brakes. Then as the tire touches back down, you can see the tire just come to a complete 100% stand-still as the 1,047:1 gearing takes its time to go from the coast-side back to the drive-side of each gear.

(click here to download / 759 Kb)

Here is another angle on the "Wood Trick"

(click here to download / 771 Kb)

And here I am with Marlin's truck in Triple Low Range running through all five gears while in motion.
The gear ratios break down to the following (in Triple Low Range):
5th: 226:1
4th: 266:1
3rd: 386:1
2nd: 621:1
1st: 1,047:1

(click here to download / 719Kb)

These videos and a couple more can be found on the very old (and un-linked) Marlin Crawler Online Video webpage. Granted these videos were made on my prehistoric digital camera (Sony Mavica) back in ~ 2000, so they are pretty crappy quality but you can get the idea of what 1,047:1 looks like.

BigMike

BTW, When Marlin first went Triples back in 1995/96, and then the following year in 1997 when he came out with his 4.70:1 Low Range t/case gears, of course he ran 4.70:1 in ALL THREE CASES for a couple of months.

So he used to be:
3.93:1 (L52 trany) x 4.7 (1st Crawl Box) x 4.7 (2nd Crawl Box) x 4.7 (t/case) x 5.29 (diff) = 2,158:1.

But he pulled out one of the 4.70:1 gear set because it was just to ridiculous. Even at 1,047:1 it is ridiculously slow, BUT, it is a most excellent method of demonstrating what his Crawlers can do for your truck. And since he has a stock gear ratio of 2.28:1, he can now demonstrate the following ratios to new customers:
47:1 (Stock Low Range w5.29s / Single 2.28:1)
98:1 (Single 4.70:1 Case which is also roughly equivalent to Stock Dual Cases (180:1))
223:1 (Ultimate Ratio, Dual Cases with 1 4.70:1 gear set)
1,047:1 (Triple Ridiculous Overkill Low Range)

So he can show people what a single 4.70:1 case would look like, what dual cases would look like, and what an Ultimate looks like. Its a great way to showcase the Marlin Crawler and how the "Crawling" world came to existence as it is nearly a house hold term today. (I firmly believe that the term "Rock Crawling" was started by Marlin Czajkowski of Marlin Crawler in 1995.)
