20R timing problem
« on: Aug 22, 2006, 11:06:34 PM »
I have a 79 toyota pickup 4WD 20R engine that I am trying to replace the timing kit on it. I have a couple questions on timing it right. First there are dots on the sprockets to line the silver links up to so i put the cam sprocket dot at 12 o clock and the crank dot is at 6 o clock with the first piston at TDC. so after it is on there someone told me that after 4 rotations the dots and silver links will line back up but mine does not is that true or not. If they are supose to line up after 4 rotations how do you make this posible. If it doesnt matter and that is right than is the only thing i got left to do is time the distrubutor? thanks for any help.

as long as you had them right when you put it on,  they will eventually line back up  but i think its more like 8 rotations  , anyway,  just bring the #1  back to top dead center  and your crank should show 0 on the timing mark,  then install distribtor so the rotor lines up with #1 post on the dist cap,  usually  points towards the vacuum advance  thingy
