timing problem
« on: Aug 19, 2004, 02:29:33 PM »
1993 22re  i installed a new timing chain an set the timing by ear  seems to run good ,  but when i give it gas it wants to kinda fall on its face  but  if i ease into it it does better than flooring it .  i jump the jumpers  to set the timing but The timing mark moves erratically ,i also had the throttle position  sensor off an reinstalled it not for sure if its right  but it  idle's good an no hesitation when shifting .is this something i done installing the timing chain like a tooth off or does this sound like a bad disributor maybe

Any FI motor to set the timing you have to put it in a test mode. I see no mention of this being done.

Your symptoms sound like detonation tripping the knock sensor and that will cause the timing to retard and make the mark jump around. It will also happen with a heavy foot take off.

Look under you hood and there should be a sticker that tells you what the timing should be set and and what needs to be done to set it.

GrimReaper- he said: "  i jump the jumpers  to set the timing but The timing mark moves erratically "

If your TPS isn't set right, the ecu will think you're not on idle and move the timing around.  Sounds like you may be a tooth or two off on your distributor

Like GrimReaper said, you may have detonation (caused by improper timing setting) that could also be screwing things up.  Start over by setting the distributor on cyl one with the crank at 5*.   Make sure the pickups are aligned in the distributor, then install the rotor.  Set your timing to factory specs with the Te and E1 terminals in the diag port shorted.

Good Luck!

yeah i am with reklund5 just get TDC using the distrubutor on the commpression stroke and then look at the crankshaft pully to see if it alings and if not aling the pully then pop the distributor and set it to the #1 cylinder.
