Another 1st gen. (Now rollin on 40" MTR's!)
« on: Jul 12, 2006, 09:52:31 PM »
Well the time has come to move on from my old rig. The main reason I am doing a new one is this one is green stickered and my trailor is no more. So I figured I would just build a streetable rig. Here is a recent picture of her. Their is a Weather Guard tool box that goes in the emty space at the front of the bed.

The other side of the garage is even worse. It's pretty bad when you have to climb over your crap to get around.

Here is the new virgin about to go under the knife. I cant wait to get started. I will change some thing's like the tire/rim combo, I will sell those and get some more road friendly rubber's. I will probally end up lowering it just a touch, and will have to get rid of the Webber, Offenhouser, and maybe the header in order to smog it.

Well here is an update, I got the engine in, running and passing smog. So after that it was time to get the truck into the garage and time to work on it. A couple of my buddies came over and helped me get the bed off. After we had the bed off we saw just how nasty and dirty the frame was. I took a wire wheel and some other wierd sponge looking stripping wheel to the entire rear half of the frame. I then proceeded to mock up and mount the new front spring hangers for the chevy's. I cut off the old shackle mount's and was able to reuse them, so I got those put into place. I got all the old spring's and axle out of the way at this point. I then drug my wider IFS axle under the truck got it mounted under the chevy's and had a couple of fat friend's sit on the rear of the frame to simulate the bed and full tank of gas. I liked the look of the shackle angle so I welded it all the way on. I then used a chain hoist (a come-along on steriods) to suck the spring down flat to set up my bump stops and shock mount's. I made the bump stop's hit at flat spring so that it wont go negitive arch. When the spring is flat and on the bump I have about an inch and a half of shock left to compensate for a little give in the rubber bump. Hopefully I will get started on the front this week. Here is a pic of the begining, and a link to all of the pic's. Not all are there yet so be patiant.

Well I got the front spring hanger done and in. The 44044 front's are in place with the lift shackle's and my front axle that I have all gusseted and what not is in also. Tomarrow I will pull the steering box and get working on the IFS box and bracing for the X-over that I have on my good axle. I was able to push my front axle foward 3 inches hoping that I will have to only tub minimal amount of mateiral from the fender well. Stock wheel base for a short bed is 101" ( I have a stock short bed on the drivway, makes it easy to measure) and mine measure's 104".

Well here is an updated pic. My 1" Roger Brown body lift is in transit and I should be ordering my 30 spline's here in a couple of day's. I picked up my new tire's today and man do they look good. After that all I need is D-line work and I am hitting the trails. Well I actually have more stuff to do but I can wheel it while I do those thing's.

Well I got my new longer brakeline on today and got the brakes bled. It turns out I need a new master cylinder. Also it has been a long time since I looked at the brakes on the axle's because it was a trail only rig so as long as I could stop it was good. Well after my test drive around the block that I realized I needed the MC, and also that the rotor's are so grooved up that the pads only touch on the outside's. There is an entire "racing stripe" around the center of the rotor on both sides. So as soon as I get some spare coin I will order up the V6 calipers, vented fj40 rotor's and the bigger bore MC. Here is a pic from today to prove it left the garage.

The red that you see on half of the passenger side bed and the little square on the driver door is the color the truck is gonna end up being painted.

Well I wanted to find a way to store the spare tire with out loosing bed space and not blocking my rearview mirror. The way I did it leaves enough room for my battery's in the back on the bed floor up at the front in the corner's of the bed. All my gear like tent's sleeping bag's, chair's, table, thing's of the sort will fit on the rack. My shovel and jack mount on the rack itself. The ice chest and bin that we carry all our junk in will sit on the bed floor behind the rack. I still need to mount a few thing's like the shovel, my spare rear drive line, my axe and maybe a few other thing's. I have the thought's in my head of how I am gonna do it I just need to get around to doing it. I am also going to rig up some chain to lock the high lift into place. The way I will do it will not allow the jack to be moved from where it mount's thus also locking the spare tire in place. What do yall think?

 Kevin
