Steering Shaft Extension

I've moved my front axle forward about 4 " as well as my steering box.  All mounts are in place and angles are fine, except now the steering shaft is too short.  From my quick measurements I need to extend / replace the stock shaft on my '88 4Runner about 4" to make a good slip/shear connection.  I was wondering if anyone knew of an aftermarket shaft or perhaps a different year make or model toyota that might have the same splines or ends but slightly longer.

You'd be better off extending the upper half of your shaft by cutting it in half, extending it 4 inches and welding it back together.

what about drilling out the little pins and just using it that way? have you thought about custom spacers? the type they use for a body lift? you wont get 4" out of it, but it will improve it by at least an inch....

you can drill out the pins or just break them.  if it has 4 inches of shaft more and it fits them run it.  you can put a coupld tack welds on it to keep it from moving too.

I already drilled out the plastic pins and extended the shaft as far as it will go.  It will actually fall in half if I fully engage the splines on the steering box. I've considered putting a spacer in the ragjoint and welding extensions to it, but either way, I'd be relying on my modification to the full extent.  Not that I don't trust my welds, I'd just rather have an unmodified shaft being that It'll be on the highway as well as offroad.

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

you can go to I think 4wheel parts, i have seen a adapter that extended the steering shaft between the rag joint and steer shaft. If I were you I would find a steering u-joint setup from a 79-83 and get rid of the rag joint all together. rag joints will break if you loose the power steering on the trail and have to muscle it.
