W56 in place of AX5 and keep the Jeep T-case??
« on: Jun 09, 2006, 09:30:51 AM »
I know that the W56 Toyota transmission can be swapped for the AX5 by changing the bellhousing and input shaft.  I've only seen this swap done with the Toy t-case.
My question is can the Jeep NP231 transfer case setup be retained?   I'm hoping that maybe the tail sections can be swapped?   They both appear to have 21 spline outputs..  Thanks

Actually, the Jeep AX5 is the same as a Toyota G54 or G58 transmission.
If your AX5 is a 1984-1988 model, then it is the G54.
If your AX5 is a 1989-2000 model, then it is the G58.

Yup! The AX5 tail-components are completely interchangeable with the G-series transmission.

Thanks alot guys.  Its my understanding that G and W series both used the same RF1A transfer case or very similar.  So the W56 should also work with the NP231.  I really want to use the W series for a little more strength.

Actually, I'm not sure the tail housing is compatible on the W56.  I found some other info that says the W56 has 10 bolts and the G series have 8 or 9 (g58).

Only the W56, G52 and G54 use the gear drive RF1A transfercase. W59s (Tacoma-style 4cylinder 4WD) and G58s (some 3rd gen 4cylinder 4Runners) use chain drive VF1A transfercases.

As for the tail housings of the G50/54 and the W56, yes, they both have the same rear mounting flange, but the housings themselves are not interchangeable. I do not think you will be able to use any style W-series transmission with the NP t/case...
