22re swap
« on: Jun 02, 2006, 11:50:27 PM »
Does anybody know of a good link or info regarding an engine swap from 22r to 22re? I have done some searching and have not found much. Thanks.

Thanks for the welcome. I am from Craig Colorado. New to the Toyota scene. I have a built Cherokee and was impressed by the performance of Toyotas at Jeep Safari so I decided to build one. I sripped the truck that had the 22r last night of all of the wiring and will be stipping the 22re donor of its wiring and engine, trans, and tcase soon. Have plans to double the cases and SAS. Scored a Detroit locker for it and a set 35x15.5x15 Swamper TSL/SX on wheels last week. Also looking a tube benders so I can build a cage, front bumper, and bed. Lots of work to do.

Swaping harnesses is the way to go!  My truck runs great except for the t-chain issures!

Keep us posted.

I take a wheelin trip to steamboat lake every summer, and am there countless times in the winter (snowmbiles).

I looked at your link and thats what I am going to do. One thing I have to work out is the air conditioner electrical. My donor 22re did not have a/c, the truck does and I want to keep it. Looks like I will have to take apart the harness and put that portion in the 22re harness.
I ride the Steamboat area as well, Seedhouse is my favorite. If you need somebody to wheel with when you come this way let me know.

Get the EFI gas tank also.  It has an electric fuel pump.  I juts did a 22re swap also.  It took 2 full days to complete.  but i would say mine was harder to do then most.  it was really hard to take out my dash becasue of my roll cage so that took a couple hours to do.  I also had to fix a couple holes in the EFI gas tank i was gonna use.  It is well worth it though.  I planed to also keep my AC, but the 22re didn't have thre wiring for one.  we were gonna rewire it to work but ended up breaking one of the ac lines in the swap.

I have a complete donor 4Runner so having everything I need should not be a problem. I plan on replacing the timing gear and chain and replacing most of the engine gaskets as well while it is out and easy to work on. I will be doing away with most of the vac lines to clean up under the hood. Want to keep things as simple as possible.

I'm right in the middle of that swap as well
http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14334.0

I have my 84 for the most part striped of it's wiring, 22R is removed, and the fuel tank is gone.  My parts truck, the 85 has the motor removed and I have started on the wiring and dash.  I still need the fuel tank.

About the AC, neither of my have AC.  My friend is looking to upgrade to the 3.4 V-6 and he has AC.  Are there different wiring harnesses for AC vs. Non AC?

Good luck with your swap and good to see another CO member  :turtle:
