'82 5-spd noises...Upgrade?
« on: May 07, 2006, 05:58:47 PM »
Hey Gents, I'm wondering whats up with my tranny. I recently changed the fluid on my '82 and have noticed noise develop. It's a raspy noise that comes and goes. After about 30 minutes on the freeway it'll stop but here and there errands it stays noticeable. Got under it to only find alittle seepage coming from around the top, dunno exactly where. Also, I'm smelling gear oil in the cab! :o

First, I was wondering what tranny would I have and how do I tell? I've seen conflicting info. Either a L50 or an L52.
Second, if this tranny is toasting, what tranny out there will bolt on to my 22R with added beef?

BTW...I checked the tranny fluid today and it seems to be at the normal level of the fill plug.

Also, I searched on trannies here and at other sites and have found differing information.

Thanks a bunch for the help. I wanted to here from the experts.

go look at the metal tag under the hood,  either behind the valve cover or on the right fender,  you will see the axle and tranny codes,  G292  or something similiar for the axles  andf either L50 or L52

Yessir, Valvoline 80w-90.

I'll just see how it goes. If it becomes to much of a problem I'll report back here to find some answers.

Appreciate the heads up.

 :shake:

Well, today it happened. Running down the road in 5th, going around 55mph and about to get on the exit ramp.
Well, next thing I know I hear a free spinning 22R. Yup, thats right. Went to 4th like second nature and tried 5th again. GRRRRRRRR SQ SQ SQ....best way I can spell the sound.
I tried it just a second ago and it went into 5th. It was ALOT easier going into 5th when I was going downhill and had the engine coasting.
When I have the hammer down going uphill, no dice.

Anyone have any clues as to whats wrong?

I'm figuring my 5th gear clutch packs. Of course I'm speaking out my rear, cause I'm only a shade tree mechanic.

Also, what would y'all recommend as far as drivings concern? This is my DD and I have a test comming up so I gotta make this sucka last!!! :driving:
Think I'll hurt anything more?

TIA

Well, thanks for the warnings. I'll try to keep it easy.

Guess I'm looking at a full rebuild here.

marlins L52HD  is basically the later G54 guts in a L52 housing,

very tough  and will bolt right up and btw  is what i'm going to get when i can afford it, i had to put my L43 back in cause my L50  started jumping out of gear

Thanks for the responses Coyote

Is the Marlin's L52 rebuild kit the same as far as the "HD" is concern? They talk about HD parts and what not just wondering if it's the same as the L52HD.

I'm with ya on the cost aspect. I plan on doing it myself. Have you seen the price on the Marlin's L52HD? :hammer:
